That was great!  Got to be super fun on light tackle.  Extra points for deploying sharp objects out of an inflatable!!!

thanks!  love your reports, my son and I have had some great fishing adventures...

the harpoon is the result of researching a species I wanted to catch.  I read some great threads here and I think also the NorCal forum and thought "speargun, way cool, no freaking way", then "big sharp gaff or shark hook", maybe but I had visions of a punctured air chamber turning me into a cartoon fart boat being spun around by escaping air where the halibut had bashed a big sharp thing into my boat...I also read that netting them to 20# or so is easy but much bigger could be a handful especially on a small light boat, and I remember telling my wife "just my luck, the first one I get to the boat will be a really big one...".  ;D

so I decided a light easy to handle harpoon was what I needed.  Started with a small sharpened tip from a speargun bolt ($13.50, the only thing I had to buy), it slips inside the end of an old 3W shaft (graphite with about 8" of steel at the tip), a powerful rare earth magnet holds the tip in place, a foot long steel leader, 10' of paracord and a crab float finish it off.

I really wanted to use the 'poon but I didn't want to screw up and at first I couldn't see how long the fish really was, so to play it safe, I tried to net it but it just slid over the top of my big net and headed for the bottom...that was when things got fun and once the tip punched through and I gave it a little tug to make sure it was secure, I relaxed...and remembered that I had started the GoPro right after hooking up...cheers, roger

Great video and great fish, Roger.  Excellent job!
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

"How was fishing Sunday?"
"Not bad, I managed to catch one..."
"That's it, just one?"
"Did I mention it weighed more than my boat?"   ;D ;D ;D
