Went out bottom fishing through the surf for the first time yesterday, and yes, I did tip it over on the way in. The good news is nothing was lost or broken. Everything I had strapped down or tucked away stayed where it was put. I guess watching you tube and listening to other kayak anglers paid off. The way out was pretty easy, I timed the surf and went like I stole something between waves. The fishing was good, I caught fish, had a whale wave its tail at me, and a couple sea lions swimming around below my yak, (I think they were really looking at the fish on my stringer). All in all a successful beach launch.

Nice job, Razz.  Guess you got paybacks for what you stole from the surf gods.

Try coming in backwards next time, as the waves are breaking you just power forward over them then continue backing in.

You mentioned that the seals were looking at the fish on your stringer. We're the fish on your stringer dangling in the water?

Watch out for that!
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

Ok.  Just be careful and don't dunk 'em too long.  I make it a point to never put fish in the water wherever there could be seals or sea lions.  They can learn to associate kayakers with a free meal.  Then we all lose.

"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

here's what is waiting in the surf, at least in Florida:

Meh, part of the game.  I had one jump out of the water right behind me during a launch in July.

seals and sea lions are the main reason I keep my catch in a gunny sack, alive as long as possible.
