I had Monday off this week, so I dropped a pot off at kayak point for a few hours. I had 12 dungies in the pot, but only two legal. The bigger one was just over 7 inches across! Three others were really close to legal size. I had my pot baited with some salmon carcasses and other fish scraps from this year and a can of chicken cat food, and set it 78 feet deep.  Turned them into crab Alfredo with linguine, which was delicious!

Did you go north or south of the point?  Thinking about a crabbing run somewhere Saturday morning for crab.  Would you think it's safe to soak them overnight and pick up Sunday, realizing it's a crab shoot so to speak?  Thanks

I see a lot of crab pots off of Golden Gardens park, it has been tempting to get a pot for the next time I launch from there.

I think you're ok leaving them overnight. Just make sure you have some extra weight in you're pots to keep them from floating off.

Have 5-7 lbs per pot, but it's a pretty big swing in the tide, might not be the best weekend for an overnight soak-er, but am thinking two pots for a few hours and some trolling for blackmouth or cutthroat might be worth a run.  Also think Kayak Point gets a lot less pressure than Meadow Gardens, but have seen people get nice crab there.

I went out the Friday before the Monday you went out. It was my first time and I thought I'd give it a go in a relatively calm area so I headed over to Mystery Bay off of Fort Flagler. I have the same kayak and wanted to break it in (and my new drysuit) both worked great. I was amazed at how fast and maneuverable it is with the turbo fins. I dropped my two round rebar traps (yard sale finds) and just spent about 4.5 hours cruising around pulling them periodically. I repositioned them a few times and must have done something right because I caught a limit of Dungies and 4 really big rock crabs. The water wasn't that deep in several of the locations I set the pots (no more than 10-12 feet) and I was able to sit above and watch them enter the trap. It was an amazing afternoon, tons of seals around, eagles, shorebirds, and almost no people. I tried a little bottom fishing for flounder but couldn't find any takers. Maybe the bay is too shallow? Not sure where to go around here for that action. Anyway, I'm glad I've gotten into this sport.

Doesn't get much better than than that, and I'll bet it's pretty calm inside the bay as well.  That's not much further a drive for me than kayak point.  I'll give a yell when I can head that way, it would be fun to drops a covey of pots.  Bay only looks 1/4 mile across and a great alternative when the wind is blowing I'd assume.  Nice job, and it would really be fun to watch them come in.  I have a camera good to 40 feet and in that shallow water could clip it to a trap to watch.

Sounds good. I also want to try out Oak Bay county park. I've seen guys at the campground with pots sitting around. Sorry if I hijacked Ravensfan's thread, but he's welcome to come out too. After Jan. the portage canal beach is open for clams--love that spot.
