I wonder if they were even aware that it was the highest tide of the year. Sad story.

While certainly not meaning to make light of any death, it's important to recognize that (depending on what country you're in) statistics seem to indicate that at least in the US, drowning deaths appear to be decreasing.  Awareness/trining is key and groups like this which promote safe boating are a part of that. A tip of the hat to organizers of the group and those promoting safe outings for both members and others.

The data would suggest that trend is true from 2005-2009 which pre-dates the rapid rise in the popularity of kayaking.  The data is also only for recreational swimming areas, whatever they mean by that.

It's truly sad to hear of any death, and I in no way mean to belittle any fatality, but we are enjoying a sport in which too many people are thinking it's great fun without also thinking about the risks.  How many discussions are on this board about, after plunking down a tall stack of money on a plastic boat, whether the new kayaker can use this or that low cost gear as survival/immersion gear?  Too many.  But at least here we can try to correct that thought-process.

I don't think the victim was stupid; they just didn't think it through.

Kayaks are getting to be like Hula Hoops: lots of people want one, few practice long enough to be good at it.  The number of lower back injuries those plastic hoops caused was funny.  The number of people dying when kayaking is a tragedy.

My thoughts are for all the families of all of the victims.  Be safe out there!

The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.
