They also make another one, that I have read fits, but won't hold firm because the Hobie molded holder doesn't have a pin at the bottom to keep it from twisting. (I have heard it works OK for camera mounts however)
RAP-385-12U is the part number and looks like:

I went through the same headache you did and ended up just mounting a round Scotty 344 flush mount over top of one of the molded-in rod holders.

I've never seen that RAM part before. Thank you for that and the Scotty base idea.

I think this is the latest version, it has a slightly different #. RAP-B-385-12U

If you already have one of these, you can slip the factory o-ring over BOTH wedges, or buy another, thicker o-ring. Works for me.

O-ring jokes aside, I don't understand exactly what you're saying. The amount of slop I'm dealing with is way more than what I'd think a thicker o-ring would fix, but I think I'm missing something.

I'll preface this buy saying I wouldn't use this for trolling or heavy-duty applications, but it works fine for rod-storage our light-duty stuff on my yak.

The image has an arrow showing where I've rolled the o-ring down to. It's now positioned at the vertical mid-point of where the two-wedges meet. It provides enough grip to be decently sturdy inside my flush-mount hobie rod holder.
