I have no experience in kayaks, at least in the ocean... I was wondering if any of you had any tips or recommendations?

I will be going to Homer,AK in May and I will be doing some fishing. I would like to know if anyone in this group is in the Homer area around early May?  What are some tips that you would give to a newbie on kayak fishing ?

Regardless of where you are in the world, what water body you plan to play in, the water temp, air temp or skill level, here are some basic things to begin your research on to increase your survival success rate.
-Comfortable US Coast Guard approved PFD.
-Proper immersion gear for said body of water.
-Appropriate communication device, and know how to use it in the event of emergency.
-Know how to read and understand forecasts for tides, wind, swell, current, etc..
-Understand your limits and when to just call it a NoGo day.
-Filing a float plan.

There are heaps of good info scattered all over this forum, Google, YouTube, and others.
See if you can dig up some info, absorb it, and try to make a mental plan to work from.
Be ready to bring some of your findings to the table for any clarification you may need from there.

Armed with the basics, it will be much easier to talk specifics with anyone here rocking experience and willing to help you spend your hard earned mooola preparing for this new adventure you are looking for.

BTW - Welcome to fam.  8)

Welcome!

This is the place I picked up all my initial knowledge and a great group!

May time, we will be focusing our efforts off of Whiskey Gulch about 5 miles north of Anchor Point.  Shallow water halibut and kings should be rally good.  Its been my favorite month of the year so far in many ways.  I also plan on hitting the Lower Kenai River while its too shallow for novice power boaters.

Listen to the folks here.  Like any inherently higher risk activity, most of us have had near misses that you can avoid.  It's doubly important in Alaska.

You CANNOT get info solely from a national site or definitely not a Florida or Southern California site and think the same solution applies here in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

You are going to love it!!

Let's fish!!!!!

Franco, there are lot of us kayak anglers up here in Alaska, and the number is growing every year.  You won't have problems finding somebody to fish with in May.  Follow INSAYN's recommendations.  Use this forum's search feature and read as many posts as you can.  There is far too much to think about for someone to dump all of that knowledge on you in one post, but it is all out there on this forum if you go looking for it.  If you have specific questions about equipment, fishing tactics, weather that you can't find the answer to, please ask.

Keep an eye on the Alaska forum.  Many of us announce our plans to go fishing a week or two in advance.  If nobody has announced plans to go fishing within a week or two of the date you want to go, it's fine to start a thread looking for a partner.  You probably won't find somebody that will commit to fishing with you two months ahead of time because we can't pick dates that far out.  In addition to all the uncertainties of daily life (we all have families, jobs, other things to do), the weather gets a big vote in whether it's safe to fish or not.  Do not worry, if the weather is good enough that you (a salt kayaking first-timer) have any business being out on the water, there will be other kayakers on the water in the usual spots.

The Great Alaskan Outdoors Show in Anchorage coming up in a couple of weeks usually has some great kayaking seminars that would help you a lot.

I have been asked by Alaska Raft and Kayak to do 3 seminars on Kayak fishing during the Great Alaska Sportsman Show.  They have not released the schedule yet so I do not yet know the exact times and dates.

I also will be doing a seminar at Land's End Hotel May 19 and 20th.  This is a fund raiser for the Homer Water Trail Committee so there is a suggested donation.  Alaska Raft and Kayak will be bringing down demo kayaks.  Most likely 2016 (not mirage 180) outbacks and Pro Anglers.  My son will have a 2017 mirage 180 Outback available for trial.  Flier below (I did not create the flier...a little embarrassed by it).

I will be getting ready with everything I need as far as equipment and PFD...as well as any communication device and well why not, may be some flares haha
