Good evening all! I just wanted to drop a quick post and introduce myself. My name is Harrison and just recently, as in last weekend, picked up a kayak (Trophy Beach 126). It is nothing fancy but at least it is a start. I have been talking to my wife for a few years about picking one up with the intent to fish and I cant describe how excited I am to finally be here. I live in Rainier and work out of Hillsboro. I was prior Navy and from Nevada originally before snagging a great job here. I look forward to interacting with all of you and sponging all the information, tips, and techniques I can. Maybe one day, meeting up with some of you. I am a complete noob so I will be lurking mostly but I cant wait to get out on the water. Cheers!

Welcome Harrison,  and thanks for your service.  Learning and sharing is what the forum is for.  Best of luck with the new kayak.  I've seen some great YouTube videos of yakanglers in your neck of the woods.  Stay safe and enjoy!

Welcome Harrison. Since you are a veteran, there is a group on here called Heroes on the water. The group takes veterans, police, fire and emergency services people out fishing on kayaks. That is what they do, and they are really good at helping someone get started. They include the families of veterans as well which is awesome! That is how I got my start in this awesome addiction! Now my kids and I all have kayaks of our own and love it!

Welcome Harrison and thank you for your service.  I live in Cornelius and work in Hillsboro also.  I frequent Hagg Lake (when I can).  I usually post up an open invite when I go.  That'd be a good spot to get out and get comfortable with your kayak.  I am the Chapter Coordinator for Heroes on the Water - North Oregon Coast and it's kind of late notice but we have an event this Saturday in Lincoln City if you don't mind the drive.  We supply all the equipment and tackle needed to get out the water for a day of fishing.  All you need is a fishing License.  So you could leave the kayak at home and we'll set you up in one of ours.  There is also a Portland chapter that may be a little closer for you.
You can find out more about HOW-NOC here:

We'll see you out on the water!

Welcome!  I'm another of the works in Hillsboro crowd.  The HOW events are a really good way to meet people and get involved.  A journey out to Hagg sometime is also a great idea as suggested.
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I will definitely check out the HOW. I would love to go this weekend but I already have other plans. I would love to attend the next one though if I can.  I appreciate the advice everyone!

When your ready to get some sodium on that boat I live in Garibaldi and freak(went) the Tillamook Bay it's a good starter for saltwater introduction. Welcome and enjoy your first of several kayaks >:D
