I’m taking this week off and plan to hit the mouth of the nestucca a couple of times. Is anyone else interested?

Possibly. I expect to go there before long...as soon as I can get a day.

I’m going to go tomorrow, and at least one other day this week. It would be awesome to have some company

That’s awesome! We’ll see how it goes tomorrow, and go from there. Do you pedal, or paddle? The reason I ask is because the tide swings are pretty large this week and it will be a lot of work to maintain position out at the mouth. I’ve only been pedaling a couple of months, before that I was paddling a trident 13. I don’t feel like I could troll the mouth on the trident for very long while the tide is swinging hard. There are other options though, like tossing spinners up near the boat ramp. That’s probably the route I’d be taking if I were paddling. I might end up there anyway depending on how long it takes for my legs to lock up.

Are folk having any luck?  I am off this week but it will be hard to tear away from the mouth of the Lewis on the Columbia.  It was really good today, but I had to cut out early.  To kayakers heading out as I was leaving.

I was there a couple weeks ago and there were fish being caught, all hogs. That’s why I have to go back.

I won't make it due to wrapping up some house painting and drainage issues here before the monsoons hit again. Good luck.

By the way, I did paddle to the mouth last summer trout fishing and the wind was so bad coming back that I ended up dragging my kayak on foot along the spit about half the way. It can be a consideration down there.

That's good to know! I'm (unfortunately) paddling, so it sounds like it may not be ideal for me. Maybe I'll make a solo run some time and see how it goes so as to not hold anyone else up.

I’m in no way trying to discourage you from fishing there. I would still be going with or without pedals. Like I said there are other options like tossing spinners up by the launch, and some other places that I’m not yet familiar with. We may not exactly be fishing together for the most part if you take that route, but we could touch base before and after. [emoji847] Also, you could probably fish the mouth efficiently during the slack tides before it starts to run too hard.
I’m no expert, still trying to figure this out myself. Just telling you what I think I know.

The "sand dune" below the ramp is good but watch out for speeding boats. You can get away from the ramp crowd without going too far.

The mouth of the Nestucca was very slow. I got to the launch at around 6:30, geared up and got out to the mouth right at slack tide 7:18. I fished low slack and the incoming tide until an hour before high slack along with 4 power boats. It amazes me that those power boats made it out there at low slack! There were sections of the bay I had to paddle, because it was too shallow for fins. There was no action at all out there. I’m totally full of the woulda coulda shoulda’s, like shoulda gone on the ocean instead, or shoulda had lunch there and got my butt back on that yak. Man was I beat after pedaling against the tide all morning though!

Thanks for the report. Was it elbow to elbow at the ramp? See any caught? I remember running aground on those sand bars and walking a time or two and that was paddling.

At least you gave it a shot!  Guaranteed to not catch anything if you don't go  :).  How deep is it at the Nestucca mouth?

I'll be fishing either the Alsea or the Siuslaw this weekend.  Good reports from Alsea, and the Slaw was very nice to me last week, so it should be good either way  8).

Out near the mouth there are some deep holes, 20ish feet. The average area where most people are trolling is around 8-15ft. It takes between 4 and 5 ozs to stay down during the swing with no flasher.
The Nestucca is an awesome place with big fish, and good days there are sure to come. I’m definitely considering trying other options until the Nestucca picks up again though.
