Zee and I are planning to get our chum thing on tomorrow.  Probably going to hit Oakland Bay out of Shelton.  It's a very high high (9:17AM) and a pretty high low so we don't have to worry about a mud slog on the way out.   Will be launching at the WDFW spot past the golf course around 7:00 so we have a couple hours before the high.  Flyfising if the wind cooperates, otherwise anchovies under a bobber or other standard chum fair.  Anyone?  Bring an anchor if you got one, it might be useful.  If the weather is on the nasty side, we'll still shore fish this location (waders are useful if this is the case).

Yeah man, sounding like the weather might be a little nutty but looking to get into some battles w/ the dogs. If you've never fished for chums, it's an experience to be had. And if you can launch a fly it can be even more fun. Haven't heard any reports but it's the time of year so if you're free, come on down!

Arrggg, yer right Z, weather looks nutty indeed.  I'm guessing we'll be shore bound and sans fly rods ...

i was planning on going out in the morning and actually taking a fishing rod this time but i don't know now...i shoulda gone today it was sorta windy but didn't rain most of the day...i would join you but would hate driving from west seattle all the way down there and finding out that we can't get in the water...i really wanna see zee's setup and what that plano box looks like (whats inside that thing anyways ive never seen one)...my big tackle box is too big to fit in the well and my little ones are to small to hold much of anything lol

i was just gonna run over to the grocery store and get some herring and plug it i guess...pinching all the barbs on my hooks now lol...of course im just launching from my house so if i can't catch anything that way i may go get some kind of lure...all the lures i have in my tackle box are for bass...hey do big spinners that work for bass work for anything in the sound?

We're still going to fish in the morning, but it will be without kayaks.  Gonna shore fish it ...

just got back i took Richards advice and quit whining lol
unfortunately i personally did not catch anything but given the gear i was using (14 pound test on a fairly flimsy rod) i am kinda glad i didn't hook anything lol...Zeelander caught 2 though....the fish were jumping everywhere right in front of us its like u could reach out and touch them....definitely worth the trip...plus the rain quit when we got there and started back up when we left so the weather was pretty good...i even got a little sun on my face lol....now i need to get some waders...all the guys were laughing at my mysterioso set :)  it kept me pretty warm though just not as warm as being dry in waders....i tempted to take the kayak out for the rest of the day lol

We got to "the hole" late after detouring to another traditionally productive spot.  Should have zigged, instead we zagged.  There were 2 other guys that went to "the hole" and they were hooking up.  Of course it died right as we got there.  It was the top of an extremely high tide and the fish pushed up high on the opposite bank, just outside of casting range.  Zee went up about 100 yards where they were bunched up a bit too and I think he hooked 5, landing 2.  I hooked 2 and lost them both, one busted the line at the business end on the hookup.  The numbers just weren't there like I'm used to seeing them when the run is on, but there were still enough to keep things interesting.  It should only get better for chums from here on out.

I haven't been fishing for a while, but got my friends to stop in Hoodsport and let me fish for a few hours while on the way back from a hike in the Olympics today (11/2).

It was super fun, I had at least 10 hook-ups, landed three, and kept a bright one to try in the smoker.

I was using a bobber and anchovies.

It would have been fun with the yak, but wasn't necessary... I was in chest waders.

Fish on!

- Matt

Fishing w/o the yak is very interesting. Something about the way we walk that shows we're a bunch of kayakers. ;D Like everyone said the weather was on/off but not nearly as bad as the forecast. Like pole said when we showed up the bite was a little slow. The creek was really narrow so the chums could easily see us. In fact when we finally got there they almost all pushed to the other side of the creek. I tried to get 'em on the fly but no takers. It was really tight w/ blackberry bushes so casts were pretty bad and I could see 'em scatter when I false casted.. so switched to conventional gear. The bites were really light and was just getting them in the lip. Lost a bunch of them. Inadvertently snagged 2 which sucked but landed one nice biter. Ended up hooking 9 and landing 3. Kept one of about 15#'s to do the smoker thing like matt.

Well brined that chum and smoked it last night and came out unbelievable. I'm pretty surprised as it was the first time I'd smoked fish. Had some on a bagel w/ cream cheese and capers for breakfast... :tongue11: time to go get another!! ::)

BTW if you've never tried you can pull out the collars (bone behind the gill plate) and the meat in there is insane. You can see them as the curved pieces on the plate.

By the way, where are the actual fishing pics?  ???
You know you'd never hear the end of it if you posted a report w/out pics on NCKA!  ;)
