I did a dumb move Wednesday and shut my door on my salmon rod at Pacific City. In the market for something new. My old rod was 20ish year old lamiglas that I liked pretty well. I hit just about every fishing store in Salem today and didn't find anything to my liking. Most of the rods were too long. I might need to run up to Portland tomorrow to find something.

I honestly really like an 8'6" ugly stik. It's short enough that I can get the fish up to my kayak and I dont really worry about high sticking it. Also, if it breaks, I'm only out about $60 instead of a few hundred.

I use a 2-piece 8'6" Berkley extra heavy casting rod. I know "extra heavy" sounds pretty stiff, but it's not. This is my go-to all around rod, good for all salmon, from yak or shore, and great for ling. Good on a downrigger trolling or mooching.

For humpies I use a shorter, lighter 2-piece Berkley spinning rod. I'm a dash and cast humpy fisherman.

For halibut, sturgeon, and sometimes for ling I use a stout Ugly Stik.

Was shopping for 3 new rods this spring to match up with my Tekota A line counter reels.  These are my trolling reels.  I hired a kayak guide and he recommended the very reasonably priced Ugly Sticks.  I ended up with 3 of those.

I also considered the Talora:  http://fish.shimano.com/content/fish/northamerica/us/en/homepage/Trolling_Rods.html
The St. Croix Eyecon:  https://stcroixrods.com/collections/freshwater/products/eyecon-trolling

Have fun picking out your perfect trolling rod for you.

If I was to get a new one I've always been a fan of the AIR series, I liked the IM7's better than the newer IM8 but don't think they sell the 7's anymore. You can find em in most lengths and actions. When they go on sale at Bi Mart they are pretty reasonably priced and they are tough rods.

However I personally use a cheapo Skylitz "house rod" from Tillamook Sporting Goods (I don't normally shop there because most things are waaaaay too expensive) but my father in law had a few laying around in his garage so I borrowed one. As a kayak rod it's perfect. Short and heavy action without being too thick, I think the tip may have been broken at one point or another, either way it might be worth a look to see what they have in the house rod bin next time you're in town.

For years, I only used a 8'6" Shimano TDR med-heavy. Caught tons of fish with it. This year, I bought a Tica Tyee Classic 9', and it's been a fun rod so far (haven't hooked a Chinook with it yet, only coho and rockfish). I'd recommend either rod for salmon trolling, and they're pretty darn cheap too. TDR is thirty bucks, Tica is around fifty.

I emailed lamglas about replacing my rod, and they are going to replace it with the new version of my rod since it isn't made anymore at a reasonable price, so I am going to do that for now. Thanks for all the tips!

Glad to hear they are taking care of you.  I was going to suggest my go to rod of the Shimano Trevela.  It is a 7'6 in Medium Light, which has served me well, and I have caught a lot of fish with it.  I really only troll and jig with it, so I won't say how good of a casting rod it is, because I have never tried it.
