We will be out at Sunset tomorrow. The fishing has been just bad the last two days, it's gotta turn on tomorrow.

And NOAA lied about the swell for today, it was way bigger then 3-4 foot.

Looks good though for tomorrow:
.THU...N WIND 5 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. W SWELL 2 TO 3 FT AT 12 SECONDS.

Brian, Your welcome to come tonight and crash at my place so you don't have to drive 8+ in one day.

There is also supposed to be a shortcut to bypass eugene and hit 126, do you know that one? save a little time
See ya on the water..

Actually it's more like 4.5 hours from PDX to Sunset Bay. That's if you come over to the coast by going  from Halsey to 126 via the Poodle Creek cutoff. It takes me almost 1.5 hours to get to Sunset from Florence. Sunset is quite a bit further that Coos Bay, especially with the city traffic to contend with. I'll be there about 9am to try to score some AOTY points!

Uh, I'll have to fess up and say I haven't really fished the Gorge Lakes.  I've just heard they can be good nearby options.  Benson Lake near Multnomah Falls might be a good bet, though I don't think they stock it in the winter.  I think the better trout lakes are on the WA side of the border.  Battleground Lake gets good reviews on the fly fishing web sites.  Silver Lake gets stocked I think.

Might also consider Cape Meares Lake out near Astoria, I think they stock it with leftover hatchery steelhead in the winter.  Cullaby Lake is another good bet out there.  I believe those are stocked during winter.

My favorite trout lakes near Portland won't be accessible again till May or so.

I think Cape Mears lake is actually near Tillamook, if it the one I know.  Lots of action on planters and there are some bass to be had.

As for a local PDX river.   The clackamas is in shape and producing fish.

The ocean looks awesome!!   If I wasn't having fun catching steelhead tomorrow I would be all over a trip into the salt.

Jeez, don't torture yourself (or the rest of us).

Looks like I could launch even my open rowboat through that "surf".

Does anybody rent kid's wetsuits, out of PDX?

I feel I need to share the good (fishing reports) with the bad (disappointment about not getting out).  What happened to the time honored tradition of calling in sick?

I don't know.  I think Alder Creek might rent suits.

Along the coast there are a few surf shops that rent.

Sadly, this calm ocean is fleating.  Ten foot waves are due back starting tomorrow.  The next opening will probably be in March sometime.

I sent emails to Alder Creek, All Tri Sports and a shop in Cannon Beach. Even if it's too rough on Sunday, it'll be good info for future reference.

Just got a positive email response from Alder Creek. That opens up the possibilities, so that I would be much more comfortable attempting something like a dino search on the Willamette. Time to work out my anchor rigging. ::)

Got the itch too.

Pisco - Check out the basement of Next Adventure on Grant Street in Portland.  I was just there buying a splash top so I can try and keep up with you guys on the coast this year.  Anyway, they had a whole rack full of used kids wetsuits in the basement.  Plenty of adult sizes too.  You can probably pick one up and own it for just a little more than it costs to rent.

Also - I just took a walk along the eastside riverfront walkway in downtown Portland and saw a couple of Sturgeon fisherman fishing from shore.  They had two nice keepers and I noticed that familiar small box of sand shrimp you can pick up from any Joes or Fisherman's Warehouse, etc.  Make sure you give those a try if you go out for Sturgeon.

Thanks for the info, DC. I'll check it out.

Hmm, maybe I should power through for the drive on Friday night, and fish Saturday.

Jason,

Steelhead on the Nehalem sounds good.  My son doesn't have day care on Monday so that sort of kills the idea of fishing on my federal holiday.  I'm still working on fishing with Pisco Sicko on Sunday, but we haven't settled on a location/time/species.

I did make it out for a couple hours this afternoon with FishesFromTupperWare for some sturgeon out of Sellwood Park.  The tide was going out and the water levels are a bit high still, my anchor system didn't perform as well as I would have hoped. That, and I didn't have enough weight on my fishing line to really get to the bottom.  At least I had a nice paddle on the river, but I still wish I was able to hit the coast.

What section of the Nehalem? Are you thinking of floating it? I've waded the lower sections in the summer (flyfishing for cutts), but other than a few exciting posts on iFish, I don't know anything about floating it.
