Hey All,

I’m considering playing hooky on Friday and fishing Westport. I’ve been there several times including surfing but never kayak fished there.

Can anyone recommend a basic plan for a session there? As well as weigh in on the surf forecast too. Currently showing 2-4’ with 12mph winds. Looking at webcams tonight and a similar swell, it looks pretty mellow.

Launch in the cove then fish N side of the jetty? Lings and rockfish, drop a crab trap? I’d welcome any advice or recommendations.

I'm a rookie at gauging surf forecasts, but tomorrow's isn't looking like it'd be worth my while to take a sick day. My understanding is that ideally the primary swell period will be at least twice that of the primary swell height. On top of that - and maybe I'm too picky when it comes to wind, but the wind forecast is approaching my "Maybe not" threshold for Sound fishing.

Now, maybe fishing the North jetty would shelter you from the primary swell and the wind. I'd guess not -- the primary swell energy has to go somewhere, but I'd be interested to hear the take of people who are more informed than me.

Update: I posted something similar on a FB Westport Sportfishing group, there was a comment cautioning around the major tide swing (it is significant). But my favorite so far is the first one, “Sounds like a death wish.”.

Hopeful to get some more feedback, you guys are the most relevant and reliable resource.

I’ve gotten some legit intel recommending bailing on the plan for tomorrow due to the timing and tide swing. I may cast from the jetty, even considering a bottomfishing charter. The jones is strong! And need to get out of town.

You found a bottom fishing charter that isn't chasing after butts?
