Hello all,

I'm brand new to Kayaking, but very excited to try it.  I've been fishing for almost 40 years, but never from a kayak.  Can't wait!!  I'm looking forward to fishing mostly in the salt, but might enjoy some freshwater trips too.  I'm also interested in duck hunting from a kayak as well.  This group was recommended to me and I'm excited to be a part of it.

Tight lines!

Welcome to the NWKA form Bullfrog.  I am a relatively new member to the forum and it is a great place to learn as the members are willing to share their kayaking wisdom.  Searching the archives is a great way to get a jump start on learning.  As far a duck hunting from a kayak, in my net surfing I have seen individuals post pictures of building PVC frames specific to their kayak and fitting burlap and camo netting to create a floating blind.  Using an anchor and stake out pole, I can't think of many blinds more stealthy than a kayak.  Here is a picture I saved a few years ago as a reference.

Welcome, Bullfrog. I’m in the Tigard area myself.

YakHunter, I like that idea. Have you looked into building something like that for yourself yet?

That's an awesome blind frame!  Thanks, Yakhunter for the info.

I have checked into building one but too many projects right now.  Here is a different build (same concept) of a finished kayak blind.

I like that style of blind.  I wonder if it folds down at all or would you have to paddle out with it in set up?

The blinds I have seen seem to be set up initially and paddled that way to the hunting spot.  Probably would not be too difficult to design a way to pin the joints instead of gluing them (at least partial structures) to allow easier paddling/storage/transportation.  Possibly have a front frame section and a rear frame section leaving the middle open for paddling, then add extra bars and camo in the middle when you reach your destination.  I think I also would include some kind of outrigger(s) to stabilize me when I pop up and begin shooting as I am not the most graceful of individuals.  Would hate to go swimming with my shotgun........ :'(

Every year I tell myself I am going to go duck hunt from my kayak, either in Scappoose bay or maybe upper Tualatin...and I never make it happen..maybe this year.

Now is a good time to head to your favorite hardware box store and buy a bunch of PVC pipe, connectors, and foam pipe insulation (padding for kayak).  They are relatively cheap.  Search the net for alternative designs (steal from the best).  Life is to short for somedayisle.....  Something about having the materials on hand is a great way to get started.

I had a thought.  You could not glue the joints shown in the red circles which would allow the sides to fold down for easy paddling and retrieving ducks from the water.

Ill admit to not being the best duck hunter in the world, but the full blind seems a bit overkill in many ways and would make it hard to shoot, I would think.  I think if you had your upper body in camo and you disguised the color of the yak/brushed it a bit, I would think you could do well.

For the tualatin, I was thinking you could kinda float and "jump shoot" ducks, probably dont need to be too disguised for that.

You could be right.  I think more in terms of my layout blinds where I have to flip the cover when duck/goose hunting.  The birds are a bit skittish around here and circle a lot to check out the decoys before they commit.
