Brian & I got a late start since we were worried about fog.  Launched at 8:30 and headed out and a bit north.  I was using my downrigger for the first time in the ocean.  The 6# ball had quite a bit of blowback, but I don’t dare risk using anything heavier on my Scotty Laketroller.  I tied on the Pro-Troll thing I bought off Amazon recently for $7.99.  Two feet behind it was one of those pink hoochie things with a strip of herring on the front hook.  I had it at 20’ – 30’ all day.  Brian was using one of those artificial cut plugs and had a diver tied on with some kind of triangular shaped flasher.

First bite was around 105’ and it was Brian.  Kept going and Brian got bit again at 137’.  Hatchery Coho landed.

Within 10 minutes he had another bite in that area and I also landed a hatchery Coho after missing a first hit that released the line from my downrigger clip.

Inside 135’ water temperature was 53.8° F and at 137’ it dropped to 52.5° F.

Moving on out again, we found a nice wide north to south slick in 175’.  Birds & bait…it looked fishy.

Brian hooked up only to have the fish break his (old) leader and then jump in his face.  After getting back in the water, he landed his 2nd hatchery Coho.  I landed and released a native and then got my 2nd keeper.

Good job guys!
Sounds like we all had a great day.
The meat on these coho (a new species for me to be catching and eating), has been such a beautiful color, and so tasty, probably the best salmon I've ever eaten.

A couple of the wilds I caught yesterday, had a distinctly pink sheen to them.
Does that indicate anything in particular?
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

Funny. I have the EXACT same fish cleaning station. Board on the AC unit with a beer ( or 3) depending how good the fishing was. Nice haul

Outstanding, great report, I'm green with envy, my ocean salmon this year got paused to help both my son's move (one from AZ to Eugene, the other across Corvallis), but being a dad is forever, the salmon can wait.

hoping now for a friendly ocean...
