John Day River hikes?

We're going to do a six-day 69-mile kayak trip on the lower section of the John Day River, from Clarno to Cottonwood Bridge, launching on June 7.  Does anybody have any favorite hikes in this section of the river to suggest or recommend?

Last year we did the upper section of the John Day River, from Service Creek to Clarno, which is a 48 mile trip.

That is a gorgeous section of the river.  I have done it quite a few times.  It is much more rugged than the upper stretch.  The hikes we have done have been just making our own trail.  The views are great though.  The biggest factor will be where you can find an open camp spot then hike from there.  Send a pm if you want any more specific details.
