I'm looking for an opportunity to take the kayak out along the inside of the Newport North Jetty.  Fished from it a few times and want to try from the water.  Seems like I could go out towards the end on a low slack and just kind of ride the tide back into the harbor.

My question for the old hands, assuming winds and swell are okay,  is what kind of tidal exchange would you consider too much?

I've seen the water ripping near the crab docks and don't want to get stuck in that, but am not sure what one would consider manageable

Thanks

Keith

I wouldn't do it on a tide swing of more than five feet. Under that, you should be alright. The current makes snagging bottom a regular occurrence, so I'd focus the fishing effort on slack tide and the first hour of the incoming when the current is light.

Make yourself as visible as possible. Like, giant flags. The commercial guys will want to yell at you for not being visible, even if it's a flat-calm day and you're the only one out there  ::).
