Since I use braid on almost all my reels I normally have to tie a leader of mono. My go to's have been to tie a swivel on and then the leader or do a uni-uni splice. The swivel was strong but it wouldn't fit through the guides so if I had a long leader was hard to land fish. The uni-uni was nice but not quite as strong as I wanted. Problem I saw was all the stress was right where the mono wrapped around the braid and made a 90 degree turn. When it got really tight under pressure it constricted the single wrap of mono and broke right there regularly. I'd looked for a new knot that made sense physically, was proven to hold well, and wasn't too hard to tie. What I came up with was the J Knot.

The nice thing about the J Knot is that it doesn't require the mono to make a 90 degree turn around the braid and create that constricting point. Instead it has a few turns that it takes together with the braid meaning the turns are more rounded out overall. I also like that the knot is pretty low profile and slips through the guides nicely.

Give this one a shot sometime.

my neighbor finally convinced me that braided is the way to go.
This knot will be the first I learn to master and try.
Thanks for the knowledge and report.

I don't find the J-knot as strong as the doubled uni-to-uni for braid to mono splicing.  YMMV.

Where I find it shines is for mono to flouro ... proven tough for many live bait tuna on a 20# outfit.  Careful not to cross the traces.

I'll have to give that a shot.  Looks like it might be easier for tying on tippets also.

I also use the double uni knot but this looks like it would tie and clean up a bit quicker. Time to play around with it.

I'm an albright + bimini guy myself.  I'll give the J knot a try.

Although all my braid/mono junctions are double unis, I've tied a couple of Albrights tonight and I love it. It is easier to tie than the double uni and even cleaner. I don't know about the relative strengths of these knots, but the manufacturer of PowerPro recommends the Albright when the braid and mono diameters are substantially different diameters and the single uni/uni knot with similar diameters.

YMMV

interesting knot to say the least, but it looks strong definately one to try out.  I've tied biminis before and mine always break off above the knot... any ideas as to why?

How far above?  If within 1/2inch of the know, I'd suspect line twist.

line twist is still a factor even in braided line knots?  never been a factor for me before trying the bimini... ???

Perhaps excess rubbing of the line together when tying it?  Thus leading to the line being weaker.  Spectra is hard on itself and other lines in general.
