I've had pretty good luck with standard horizons. I know some people have had issues with theirs. Not too pricey, and should last you at least 2 or 3 years
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

I also use Standard Horizon radios.  I have 3 of them including my first one that is now 10 years old and still works.  I would recommend them to anyone looking for a good VHF radio.

I have a Standard Horizon HX300.  It does not get used heavily but has been a reliable radio.  Bought from West Marine on a sale.

that is the right and privilege of any free American."

I also own and enjoy the features and ease of use of Standard Horizon radios, see below for models I have used along with some basic details. You should compare accross models to see if they fit your needs):

HX210 (6W, larger display, craddle charger)
HX300 (5W, USB port for charging, more compact)
HX890 (6W, less compact, USB port + alkaline battery port, integrated GPS, DCS: Digital Selective Calling great for emergencies/distress functionality)

They all float, have great battery life, handy for powerboat boat or kayak use. Model numbers may slightly change over time but pretty similar models remain on offer. Standard Horizon tends to run $25 to $50 off coupons sometime in May/June for popular models, so something to consider depending on how soon you need the radio
Hope this helps.
