It's almost lake coho time again!  lol

Uhtred and I visited the mouth of the Siltcoos river and there is a channel but it's only connecting to the river at very high tides.  Not as bad as some years when the river just runs into a solid sand dune but for now, there's likely only a connection for a short amount of time on some days.  I'll be visiting the river mouth on Oct.9 or 10 at high tide to check things out again.

At the lake there is better news, water quality and visibility are good, plus lake level is decent.

cheers, roger

FYI-  Uhtred hasn't learned to stay on the kayak yet, planning to work on that at the lakes soon.  He really likes to swim.  ;D
However, if there are no tennis balls visible, he stays on our PB and is well behaved/relaxed when there's a 'fish on' and during netting.  I have put big Siuslaw chinooks in the net both days he has been out so far, including this one where it was just me and him on the boat.

Thanks for the update, your lake reports are always much appreciated! 8 look forward to seeing you and Uthred out there soon!
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

all good news from the Siltcoos bar at high tide on Oct.9, good connection between ocean and river, at least a few seals out in the surf which means coho are queuing near the mouth and should be coming in.

also good from the launch, same water level as on Sept.28 and still good visibility, I'll get a water temp tomorrow when Uhtred and I go for a 'stay on the kayak' outing that hopefully includes some spinner fishing for 'fish ladder' coho and then time for 'tennis ball is out, go swimming' training.

I am still reading your reports but we are few and far between.  The admins dont appear to be active so new membership is stagnant and commentary is slow.  Wish i was fishing more and id offer some reports.

Relax (Relax, relax, relax)
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where they bite?

Yeah, sometimes if feels this site is going "Comfortably Numb", some of us still visit often and post less often, but it is still a great source of kayak fishing related information, wish more posting was happening, I do enjoy your reports!!

the update from Sunday at Siltcoos is 62F water, decent visibility, lake level higher than normal for this date and no rain, slight bit of algae on the surface along the east shoreline but only there.  I saw 2 adult coho jump in the Maple arm area but no bites.

Uhtred is great with trolling but occasionally decides that casting a spinner requires him to launch overboard and have a bit of a swim.

the big surprise was the Railroad Speeder club was going North on the RR tracks across the long east side trestle as we were going south, waving and tooting horns...if you aren't familiar with them, Oregon Field Guide did a segment on them last year, S37, E3, link to it at the OPB channel on Youtube:

Rain on Saturday might help you out....
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."
--Edward Abbey--

Rain on Saturday might help you out....

unfortunatly we are just expecting sprinkles, not even 0.10", the coho will just trickle in until we get probably 2" to 3" of rain and the dam gets opened and causes a big fresh water flush to the ocean.  at least the lake level isn't low, just needs to come up another couple feet.  big atmospheric river storm is what we need.

that said, yesterday I hooked a nice jack coho near the boat while casting spinners near Nightingales, gave a good jump and looked to be about 16", then spinner came flying back at me and he waved goodbye with his tail....we didn't really see any other coho activity anywhere around the lake, so it's still going to be slow and get lucky.
