Wow. Sorry to get so many people worked up.
Guess I need to get my stuff, learn my lessons my own self.

Fishboy, I wouldn't worry about it excessively.

I can believe it would be handy for newbs to have some easy list to reference of others' gear choices. Some are going to figure it out quickly by themselves, especially if they have a bunch of experience on the water already. Others are going to need more hand holding, which is fine, too.

It does seem we get asked questions about the basics almost weekly. There's a wealth of information on this site and NCKA just waiting to be mined.

There is also a new thread called "Personal Gear Choices" that may answer many of your questions ;D

No worries Fishy!  One of my favorite things about this board is that so far we've been able to maintain a family atmosphere.  We voice our concerns and opinions freely.  We argue amongst ourselves without making issues personal.  And in a funny way, we end up affirming or re-affirming bonds.  Your topic was a good one.  The pros and cons needed discussed and I think in the end, all of us won.

don't sweat the small things.. stick around and enjoy the extremely spirited interactions here... and, like the mythbusters say, "don't try this at home....alone..EVER!!"

p.s; we're not what you would call "professionals"  ::)

very interesting reading this thread-i read several other forums of boating and fishing related content...i have to say that this seems to be the most friendly and least "negative" forum i participate in...its nice to interact with other  people with common interests w/o too much negative attitude and content...in fact another board i have been a member of for many years i hardly read anymore because of all the negative crap posted by just a few people all the time...i think the question at hand regarding an equipment list is a good place to start for a noob but only time and experience will really give someone the level of comfort they need to be safe on the water...i find the experience of learning and buying the equipment is at least half the fun of this sport...i would like to apply for the position "kayak fishing coach" so i could spend other peoples money playing and fishing! ;D...how about $300hr?

my compliments to the powers in charge for keeping this forum interesting and friendly

We actually rarely have to do a thing on this board.  It's pretty self regulating.  Guys here regularly have "differences of thought" but it never seems to get out of hand.  I love it!!!

I suggested this same thing to BS when I first started about listing your kayak(s) and some favorite hardware in your signature.  I completely understand why folks here don't want to put out a list that just says whats what.   I also agree experience and experimentation would be lost if it was just plastered out there.

However, I think now a better way to word the request would be to specify what didn't work for you and why.  Newbies at any sport, project, activity, etc don't want to go all out until they know what they are getting into.  If it means asking a million questions, and learning that is one thing.  But to go out and randomly spend money on useless stuff based on what a dealer tells you, or what you read about on another forum from another part of the world, then it is just money spent with zero gain.

If folks here (that wanted to participate) could post what absolutely did not work for them for whatever reason, this would help weed out the unnecessary spending or trial and error.

One thing I have always hated about being a newbie at alot of other hobbies is when I ask about what I should use to get started (as I would have no idea at the time), and get zero answers.  Then when I do a report out about how my first trip, event, or outing went, I get tons of comments like.....

"That was stupid, you should have used this instead."
"Why'd you do that? You should have done it this way"
"We never do it that way, duh"
"Who told you to go about it that way?"
"This is the unit you want to use, because...."
"That's the wrong size of ....., we always use...... as it is ....."

And the list goes on.

So, it may be more benificial to just make a master list of things that don't work, and give brief explanation as to why.  Whether it be due to safety, part functionality, longevity, personal reasons, etc....
From there, folks can still be open to experimenting and maybe later challenge things on the list and maybe come up with a different way to incorporate the item(s) so they are a viable option.

Add "Don't ask me how I know" to that search to get a slightly shorter, but still valid list.   >:D

I kind of feel like we need to give FFTW his own forum section to moderate called "Don't ask me how I know"
