Anybody ever been out there? I was just looking at it on a NOAA chart and it's HUGE. It's on the north jetty side and I know that area gets suuuuper windy at times.

That reef on the chart looks awfully juicy, but my read on magicseaweed suggests some pretty lumpy water. At best a dicey launch and landing (or at least very entertaining to beachgoers) on the north side. I'm sure it lays down on some days though.

Fishboys' idea of inside the bay or the south jetty look pretty doable and would seem to involve less chance of human/kayak carnage. Gotta watch the tide swings though to make sure you don't have to walk (slog) home or get swept along with the current out into the jaws. Best case is to go take a look. Fishboy, you've been there. What does it look like to you? (Spot?)

There are 2-3 charter boats, plus the usual PBers, that work out of Yaquina. I haven't spent a lot of time there, but I would guess that they all know of the reef, and probably hit it hard since it's close.

There are scads of access points along the coast that are relatively far from ports, that I would check out first.

It would be a rare day that it would be fishable from a yak. I fished the south jetty (walked) on Saturday evening (low tide) and Sunday AM (high). Caught 2 fat black bass and a 20" ling on 4" swim baits Saturday. Sunday was frigid and had no bites in 45 minutes, so I threw in the towel.
The north side jetty (inside) looks real fishy from a kayak. Would love to get a few of us to make that trip. Drop in about an hour before slack and fish until the tide got moving fast again. Easy put in on the south side.

I'd like to launch from the south side of Yaquina Head. There are a couple areas to launch from: Quarry Cove or Cobble Beach. There is a $7 fee for parking at the BLM Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area parking lot, then have to haul yaks down the stairs to the launch sites. Only supposed to launch when seals aren't present. BLM staff weren't going to let me launch there at all until I called their boss & asked why citizens were not allowed to launch human powered craft from public land. Then the story changed to not launching when seals were hauled out there. It would be great if about ten of us showed up there for a day of yak fishing.

I don't think I should hit the salt quite yet. I've only been in my yak once so far and it was in a small reservoir with very little wind and no chop. I'm willing to bet, though, that I'd be able to hit the bay in about 3 weeks to a month if you guys are willing to wait that long. If not, no big deal. There's always next time and the hundreds of times after that!

Tupperware: Inside the bay and upstream from the groins should be safe enough, but I must admit that I have never watched the tidal currents from a kayaker's perspective. Seems to me, though, that the Yaquina bar is not as treacherous as the Rogue at Gold Beach. Someone with more experience needs to pipe up here.
