or make some heads with LC13 (best) or lead core line (too stretchy, but it'll do).

Another fly option is a weighted Marabou Wooly Bugger...  Several wraps of lead line on the hook shank, and then the feathers and fur on top of that.  Add some flashabou with the marabou to flash light when retrieved.  This fly down not have the front heavy diving pattern of the Clouser, and sinks more uniformly after each strip.

I have found black, brown and olive green are the best colors, but have also used white and blue or white and chartreuse combinations to some effect.

Instead of lead wrap, you could add bead heads or bullet heads to these too...

The main trick with Wolly Buggers is to have long hackle and lots of marabou for action....  You can catch every species of fish on these flies, and if I had to fish with only one pattern, it would be a Olive Bugger...

24" is not nearly enough.  Even with 25' of T14 on my 8 weight, the drop is painfully slow.  I usually just have the fly rod along in case I encounter a school of blacks busting on the surface.

Allen,
Are you using the T14 even when targeting blacks on the surface?

Yes.  If they are there, they'll hit it before it sinks through them.  Or I just start stripping.
