Marine radio channel question

I've acquired a hand held marine radio for coastal fishing. I may try and get out to at least start practicing some surf launches and landings this weekend. My question is more in regard to VHF channels. I believe coastal Oregon kayak anglers monitor & talk on channel 69, but are we required to monitor channel 16 as well?

Yep

I think at this point in time, most radios can be set to scan, so you will be monitoring 16 automatically.

BTW:  If you're fishing an area with heavy commercial traffic, add 22A to your scan list.  This will let you know what the giant freight carrier berring down on you is being directed to do by the CG.

Love my radio, but with 5 watt peak power, it doesn't transmit too far; line of sight you know.
Try touching the VHF antenna to your carbon fiber fishing pole for more distance.
