Was out there for around 6 hours in my friends PB. The weather was pretty good, a few sprinkles here and there and the sun even showed itself for a few minutes. We were trolling wedding ring set-ups with a worm dangling off the hook. Caught 4 trout all together and had several bites, just couldn't hook up. The lake was glass most of the time and we only saw one other boat the whole time and they went off into an arm or something because we never saw them again after they lauched. The fishing should get more productive in the next couple of months when it warms up a bit. All in all it was a great day to get out and relax on the water.

Hey Sarge! I fish Detroit Lake and have had great success using the smallest spin-glow you can purchase-add two small red glass beads-and finish with a size 16 treble hook.  I troll this setup on 24 inches of leader and use only 1-1.5 inches of pencil lead.  I prefer the mouth of the Blowout Arm for my paddling pleasure.
Tight lines,
Scott

I use the Mongold Ramp and push straight across.  I was out there in Oct. and we paddled on down to the Kinney Cr. Arm.  Usually the wind blows hard in the afternoon and you can have a lot of fun experimenting with sailing back.  No wind on that trip, very unusual and a long paddle back to the ramp.

good to know. I've been scratchin my head for a while trying to think of where would be a good launch spot. The wind always was my biggest concern when I thought about Detroit so that's good info.

I don't know if you've ever been to the Silverton Reservoir but it's much closer and really nice this time of year when the water is actually moving. I believe the gate is open from 9-4 during winter then it changes to summer hours and I don't know the hours yet.

-Scott, thanks for the tip, maybe I'll see ya out there sometime. I plan on going out there quite a bit in the near future with my kayak.

Oh yeah! I've driven past that a couple of times I think. Isn't that out a mile or two outside of Silverton in the direction of Silver Falls? Yeah, I'm also interested in what is in there. Any idea of how deep it is?

I'll post when my buddy and I hit Detroit next so if you (or anyone) would like to go fishing.  What! LIKE to go fishing?
-I'm heading out to the Crooked River to go fly-fishing in about 20 min. Nice weather today here.

Scott, sounds like a plan.

Here is a link to Wikepedia's page on the reservoir. It says there are bullhead catfish in it but I've never seen or heard of anybody catching one there.

Regarding Silverton Res..

I've been there a fair amount.  I've never heard of anyone catching bullhead catfish there, I'm kinda skeptical of that.  The reservoir is around 20-35 deep in most parts... I only seem ot do really well there when I pay attention to the stocking schedules, and hit it up soon after.  The planter rainbow trout always seem to be in the 9"-10", range there it seems, if you follow the creek up it's a nice paddle and I've seen some people kayak camping up the creek on the side, I might try that one time this summer....

I've heard of people catching 14" cutties in there but I find that hard to believe as well. Maybe there's a few that come down from the river or up the fish ladder, who knows. I do know that below the dam in the river there is some good trout fishing to be done.

One of these days we should get some people together and kayak camp on Petty Island on Detroit Res. Could be a good time. We could also go up one of the arms and camp for a little more privacy.

Hey Sarge,

Mt. Angel eh? I went to school at Butte Creek, I know Mt Angel well...  Ya, I don't doubt that the occasional 14" cutthroat could be caught, if you were fishing the creek side, but I'll bet it's sort of rare.  Better luck fishing for cutthroat in the area would be the Abiqua, or Butte Creek, not really yak material, but good fisheries.... Milk creek out near mulino is also another awesome cut throat  fishery of the same small sort...

Sounds fun count me in, kayak camping is a blast. Last year I ended up kayak camping on Sand Island for the 4th of July.  It was amazing to be that close to the fireworks (they do a big show from the island).

I just went fly fishing up at the Abiqua the other day with a friend. Put the waiders on and casted a bead headed prince nymph with an indicator and caught some really nice fish. The biggest being 14-15", the biggest fish i've caught up there in a really long time, maybe ever. Nymphing is where it's at!
