On that note a little bass treble hook beats the hell out of holding a 30" halibut halfway out of the water.... Suspended by a 0 hook that is running clean through the meat of your middle finger.... While your father laughs and tells you to not bleed all over his boat.  The nice thing about that one was the weight of the fish stretched out the muscle and skin enough that I didn't have to cut the barb to pull the hook out.  That story should probably go in the "Don't ask me why I know" thread lol left a nice scar though.

I can't wait to read that one!   :laughing4:  Now, where'd'ja say those ponds were?  ;D

My wife recently found this pic of some bass I pulled out of a couple humble looking ponds near Jack Murphy Stadium (The Murph) in San Diego.

I think a few of those ponds are still there, don't know if the bass are. Nowadays, the "secret" bass ponds in SD County are golf course water hazards. I know a few guys who sneak onto courses in the middle of the night for a little largemouth fishing. It's a pretty good bet the next world record largemouth bass will come out of one of those SD County reservoirs. The homeguard bass munch the stocker trout they plant over the winter and grow to monsters very quickly. Some guy foul hooked a 25 pounder out of Dixon Lake; you can throw a stone across it.
My favorite largemouth lure is a leadhead with a rubber worm. They do bite great at night; use a black leadhead and a black worm.

Good job Spot!

I can concur how when you want to catch one, they can't be found. I fished two days this week at Mercer lake trying for a LMB. The first day, only caught one about 6 inches. Didn't even bother to measure it thinking I was going to do better. The second day, caught one about 4 inches, slightly larger than the rapala I was using. Also caught a yellow perch on the Rapala. I did hook into one that would have added some points, but lost it right at the yak. Oh well, lots of time left to add a bass to the list!

(BTW, I agree with EOB, Spot, we'll start calling you Nancy if we see, or hear about you using a lip gripper on a bass again)

Point taken...... Nancy

Okay, you got me, that's pretty damn funny!  :laughing7:

But Bsteves is to blame for the circumstances that resulted in that photo.

Several weeks after ordering (and paying for) two hawg troughs, they still hadn't arrived (shipping them didn't seem to be a very high priority). So, lacking a hawg trough, I was attempting to measure that bass with a yard stick. Seeing that it wasn't working out very well, 'Yak Monkey paddled up and offered the use of his lip gripper with built-in tape measure. Thanks YM! :icon_salut:

Yeah, a few years ago I was down that way and drove through that area. These two particular ponds, which were due east of the stadium, had been filled in and had become part of the concrete jungle. It looked like a lot of the "ponds" are now of the rectangular variety and are located in front of numerous office buildings...

Speaking of sneaking into places to fish; In an effort to kill off the hydrilla, they used to virtually drain Lake Murray, leaving a pond roughly 50 acres in size and just stuffed with fish. During those times, we'd drag our bikes and fishing gear up a trail next to the dam. The fishing was awesome for bass and channel cats. But the really fun part was when the police would show up. The entrance to the lake was near the opposite end of the dam, and clearly visible to us. When the police cars came through the gates, we'd start gathering up our gear, maybe make a few more casts, and then ride down the trail and head for home. We never had to hurry because once inside the gates, the police still had a 10 - 15 minute drive around the lake to get to where we and a bunch of other kids were fishing. I imagine at some point they wised up and had someone waiting at the bottom of the trail.

Lucky you're in OR Spot. That fish would be no AOTY pts. here in WA. We need to be under 12" or above 17". Being LMB's average 12"-17" they're a devil fish for us all. Talk about humbling..
