So haven't got the kayak yet (been looking for sales/debating which model etc) but was wondering if I get it now- whats to fish for in the winter?  ??? Salmon in abundance now but come Nov, Dec, Jan- any options or does the 'yak get put away?
Aloha, Randy

I can't speak for Tacoma, but here in Portland steelhead and sturgeon are my two main winter targets.  Both fisheries however require a bit of advanced anchoring skills.  Other than that, local lakes are often stocked with trout either in late fall and they provide something to chase.

There is a year round catch and release fishery for sea-run cutthroat trout in the south sound. They are beautiful fish and great fun on a fly rod or light spin gear. There are also resident coho that never leave the sound that should help keep you entertained.  Although neither of these are large fish, I love fishing for them in winter. Empty beaches, quiet coves and back bays and fish feeding near the surface are a beautiful sight. Exactly the opposite of the mayhem that's happening now............Chris

Also plenty of resident chinook "blackmouth" to be caught during the winter.

The ocean (at least in Oregon) can be awesome in the winter.  You just have to be flexible with your schedule and be ready to hit it when there is a good weather window.
