This weekend I will drill the first (shudder) holes in my T13A for an anchor trolley.  There is no internal access at the stern so it is wellnuts.  Do I use Marine Goop in the wellnut hole?

Also, how close to the bow or stern should the anchor trolley extend?  6" seems about right to provide a steep enough aspect angle in a current.

I've used wellnuts in the past and didn't have any trouble but most people curse them. When using them for an area that's going to take some strain, like the trolley, you might want to consider rivets. They're a lot stronger. Check Hook1 for some quality aluminum rivets.

I've installed wellnuts a few times without issue. The compression of the rubber should keep things from leaking. I usually do go ahead and run a bead of goop around the edge of the rod holder itself. As Zee mentioned, rivets work as well, and are preferred by some.

I got 50 of those expanding rivets when I ordered a couple Harken Carbo Cheeks.  Unfortunately the rivets are slightly too big for the Carbo Cheeks.  I suppose I could carefully ream out the cheeks.

It will take me a long time to go through 50 rivets.  If someone wants a few just let me know by PM.  I'd be happy to put a few in the mail.

I'm wondering if I should snug down the screws on my rear rod holders.  I was tinkering with both kayaks today and put a rod in one of mine.  Pushed and pulled it in various directions as if I were trying to unstick a lure.  Too much give for my comfort level.  I think I'll just be using mine as rod storage for now, not even for trolling.

looses screws!? I have removed and added loctite to ALL the screws on my Yak. I did this after I found some loose ones a year or so after I started using the boat.
Prolly a good idea to check and loctite all the screws on a new Yak. IMVHO

Unfortunately the rivets are slightly too big for the Carbo Cheeks.  I suppose I could carefully ream out the cheeks.

Reaming the cheeks (there's a joke in there somewhere ...) was easy.  Just started with the same size drill bit as the original holes and stepped up 1/16" at a time until the rivets fit.  I did it by hand, with a glove and bare bits.  Also the rivet flanges needed filing to fit into the indents on the cheek.  All told it took a careful, relaxing, zen-ish hour on the couch with a beer and a cigar while watching the Mariners beat the Red Sox.

After looking at this picture again, I think I may pull my rod holders and goop a wide washer behind each hole to bridge the gap drilled for the well nuts.  Then goop down the holder really good, and install the big rivets through the washers.   I'm thinking they should hold better than the well nuts.

This seems like an excellent idea, as I'm going to use rivets for my rear flushmount rod tubes. I'll 4200 some wide washers behind each hole while I have the access through the open rod tube hole.
