I took the yak salmon fishing for the first time yesterday. Ended up covering about 5 miles of the Siuslaw river, from Florence to about 2 miles above Cushman. I was on the water about 5 1/2 hours as I miss-judged the tides, and ended up having to paddle the 5 miles back to town against a stiff wind and windwaves. There were lots of fish jumping, but I saw only one fish caught. Lots of power boaters, but I was the only yak on the river. Got lots of strange looks and comments from other fishermen. All in all a very enjoyable day on the water, although I am a bit sore today!

That sure brings back 30-year-old memories. My college buds and I would rent a boat at Midway and troll down to the bridge and up the slough for bluebacks and jacks. Usually used a Doc Shelton, silver and brass, with a small pink corkie and a crawler on a No. 4 baithook. All the sweeter if the Ducks were on the radio ... That would be some nice water for yakking ...

It was defiantly a good day for it.  I was on the North Fork probably at the same time.  I put in at Benders landing and trolled back to the bridge.  I really didn't see anyone.  It was my first salmon trolling event and liked the idea of not being around a lot of people.  No bites, lots of grass floating in the water, one jumper.  I didn't hear of anyone hooking up.  Defiantly not a waste of a day.
