I've got the same combo as Pisco. A very good pair of waterproof waders with a not fooling around drytop cinched nice and tight on top. It's a lot more comfortable than a wetsuit for me and it's waterproof even when I get dunked. I've floated around in the Sound a few times and am pretty comfortable with the idea of being out there in this setup. I must stress though that I think this should only be done with good product. A semi-cheapo deal will have you leaking and in hypothermia in a sec. I still sometimes wear a spring suit underneath when the weather is a bit dicey but overall I'm quite confident with this setup. Then again I'm never in the open ocean either like Pole2 mentioned. Around here I think only a drysuit would be good for those conditions.

Hi All,
Nobody has mentioned Dry Pants (Kokatat). For the ocean these are the best. You can wear jeans, sweats, whatever you want under them. And if you go in they are not going to fill up with water. I have tested it by dropping my submersible radio in the water and going in after it. Yes I did retrieve it. And barely any water got in. I wear paddle jacket with it and my lifejacket. The best thing is for surf launches you can go in the water just below the waist to get passed the white water and stay dry. Some have mention farmer johns, which I have tried but you rear is wet. Who wants that? Now that I only fish northern Idaho lakes. Sometimes I wear waders if it is under 40 degrees. But now since the water is a bit warmer I wear dry pants, dry or regular booties and a paddle jacket. I'm so comfortable it feels like I'm in the East Cape. Polepole your are right, a radio should be one of the first things you buy along with a bilge pump and a compass to backup the gps.
Enjoy, Richard
