Not too far below, but from a vantage point we don't usually see.

That's pretty cool.

Interesting how they look purple. Now I understand why purple lures/coloring them with a purple marker are so hot.

Cool.  Looks like mysids or other zooplankton (the pink stuff) and herring?

Great picture. It's amazing how colors change underwater in different conditions. Now you've got me thinking about purple backs for my saltwater flies.

Thanks!

Tom

Nice pics DN! Yeah the herring are going nuts in our hood. There's these huge plankton balls and the herring are just hammering them. Nothing's chasing the herring unfortunately.

Sweet shots!  You need a pic of what that looks like on the sonar too.   ;D

Can we get an official "fish-geek" call on whether those are herring, anchovies or candlefish?

B is probably gonna be sleeping little and not checking in so I'll see if I can be helpful. Correct me if I'm wrong DN but if it's taken in my hood I jig these up pretty consistently and they're herring. Plus.. they.. look like herring. ;D

Yes, I see herring crashing krill.  But where are the salmon crashing the herring?

Yes, it's our hood, Richmond Beach, around noon the day we last met on the water, Sunday(?).  Unfortunately there was nothing chasing the herring except shakers.

Sweet shots!  You need a pic of what that looks like on the sonar too.   ;D

Ask and ye shall receive.  Check out the flounder on the bottom at far left, but no other fish of note around.  (What is the plural of flounder?).  This was taken on my way out around 7:30 am, and I took the photos in the same spot on the way back in.  The baits balls persisted in pretty much the same place through the morning and into the afternoon and were still there when I hauled out.

I went for broke.  Humminbird 788ci.  I am glad I did.  My mature eyes needed the larger screen (640x640).  I like the 3 quick view programmable buttons.  I'm still learning the usefulness of all the functionality.  Love the GPS for drift direction and trolling speed.  Am thinking next year may spring for the USA West (salt) Navionics topo chip.  Depends on whether I think I need it or not.  The USA West Lakes may actually be more useful.  Not as much structure fishing in the salt as in fresh.

Ummm, I take it that you haven't done much fishing for lings, rockies and halibut? I like to study charts for the less obvious structures that haven't been hit too hard.

In that you would be correct, and so I stand corrected.  I am looking forward to next year's halibut season so I need to pay attention to you halibut fisherman.  I have a few fish on my "want to catch list", and halibut is one of them.  So is barracuda and ulua.  Oh, and walleye, and ...
