Newbie here.  I am just starting to think about gearing up for salt water.  Maybe some central/south sound or close in jetty fishing to start off.  I inherited a penn seaboy 85 and would like to pair it up with something all purpose for now.  Don't think I'll be trolling anytime soon so will probably save the salmon for later, but fancy to catch something bigger than a flounder.

Fun to read this forum -- thanks.

Hey there YY,  you have a super Penn there in the 85.  It's a versatile workhorse and built tuff.

I would suggest either the good ol' Ugly Stik in 8-9ft or the Shimano TDR 8-9 ft (medium fast action).  The Shimano will probably say trolling rod.  If you can find one at Outdoor Emporium or Big 5, maybe something simiar too...these rods won't set you back too much in $$ and are quality.  You can use them for the jetty or trolling in the yak.  Any rod you choose will probably be a two piece at a 9ft length.

Anything shorter than 8ft and you will really have to work at your casting ability with an 85 level wind.

If you don't have line on your 85 yet, I would put 30lb mono or 65 lb braid...depending on what your after.  That reel is capable of landing sturgeon if you want.  I think you can put about 200 yds of 30 lb mono on it, though you might not want that much line and choose to put 100 yds backing and 100 yds mono line.

Good luck out there,
-Scott

Wow.  Exactly the type of information I was looking for.  Thanks Scott.
I don't envision doing lots of casting but will consider your advice about >=8 ft.
