My uncle always said, "It your feet are cold, put on a hat."

Not only do my feet get cold, but in any kind of cold wind my ears ache after awhile.  Been considering the following:

I do wear a Kokatat T3 angler so my neck is covered, so I am leaning toward the first item.  Any comments, suggestions, reviews, or observations are welcome.

You ain't messin around! I've been petty happy so far with just a SmartWool liner and my Lami hat. Of the two you posted, I'd probably lean towards the first. If you get warm, you can fold up the sides/ear covers without having to remove the whole thing.

Go for the first one. You won't like all that extra rubber around your neck on the second one.
I usually wear a hood with my wetsuit if I go out and try to surf. It helps keep my earplugs from getting blasted out during a wipeout. My ear canals are at least 85% closed up from "surfer's ear" after a lifetime of surfing, and if I get water in my ears, it doesn't clear out easily.

8 years not surfing didn't reverse the ear canal closure, but at least my ears dried out!
Took 'em 3 days to finally clear after my last series of faceplants and washing machine pummelings this summer.

I have a detached hood that looks kind of like the second one, and I tuck that extra rubber into the neck of my older backzip hoodless 3/4mm suit. It feels bulky and a bit uncomfortable when tucked in, though.

I don't like having cold water get flushed into my suit down the back of my neck, so I wear my 5/4mm suit with an attached hood when its really cold.

Don't mean to jack your thread, demonick, but here's a report on a new wetsuit product.

Last night I was over at my friends house discussing the board he is finally going to build for me.  (He finally got the right blank!)
He showed me this new vest he wears under his wetsuit when its really cold out. It has heating pads that run off a lithium-ion battery pack.  The heating pads are over the lower back area, and there's an on-off switch and  a dial control for high thru low settings. He and another local surfer I know each recently got one of these, and they are raving about 'em. They are now toasty when surfing in the coldest of NW conditions.
Screaming deal at only $200. What is it worth to be warm when waiting in the frozen lineup for the next perfect winter wave? Both my friends say that their backs don't get stiff and they stay warmed up and loose for the whole session, now! Even their toes are warmer! You keep your body core warm, and your extremities stay warm.
If I keep surfing, and want to ride the frozen winter perfection, I'll probably have to get one of these.

Dis is what I keep my head and ears warm with.  Picked it up at our local Farm and Ranch store under $10.

Nice, warm, and highly visible.  I have a similar one in blaze orange, but i think the yellow is more visible so I may upgrade.  Maybe we need a NWKA yellow hat ;D

I also have an Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero that I can't live without when its raining.  Its micro-fleece lined, but no ear flaps.

I have and like this one as well,
but it does nothing to increase my visibility.  It does dry fast, though.

I think something wool or fleece would be more comfortable and more adaptable to a variety of conditions.  Unless your planning some class IV in the SOT.

I'll second the Outdoor Research suggestion, they make a lot of good hats.

The full face will definitely keep you warm when wet. I've been debating the same full hoodie from kokatat for this winter/spring. I have had a neoprene hood like the first one, but with a chin strap. The one without the strap is for use with a helmet. Glacier Glove and Kokatat make some nice fleece lined rubberized neoprene. That's what I use for gloves.

If I'm not planning on surfing, swimming, or rolling, or if it's not raining very hard, I usually wear a thick wool beanie with ear coverage, sometimes with a Gtex rain hat on top. They make some with Gtex windstopper that would help with your ears. Wool outer with fleece inner on the beanie will keep you warm when wet, but is heavier when saturated than the neo-hoodies.

Also, people won't mistake you for a biker bumblebee if you wear a regular old wool beanie.
