dug thru all that i could find on that site, and couldn't find any readily available answers... kind of what i expected.. most new gen geeks and engineers are usually challenged when it comes to sharing details or passing supporting information... for all their creative genius, they have major challenges elsewhere. in this case, it's sharing hardware specs for compatibility purposes.

however, i did find out that the inventor seems to be a lady EE student with a rebellious nature. here's her URL : http://www.ladyada.net/ maybe you can mail her and find out more.

I'm waaay outta my depth here WR, but doesn't this page give you the information you need?

http://ladyada.net/make/gpsshield/logging.html

Aren't we talking about just saving the NMEA sentences kicked out by the ff/gps on the water and then crunching them into a csv file (or some such file), then using that to make the graph?

Her chunk of hardware actually goes one step further (assuming you build it with the gps module) and would allow you to use any depth finder with a NMEA output.

BTW: y'all do realize that DrDepth is designed by Per Pelin, angler from Göteborg, Sweden.

and that Limor built the diy hardware that I am imagining would work to record the nmea outputs of an FF. And that the two are unrelated as far as I know. Right?

That second video was hilarious.  Did ya see the look on the interviewer's face when Ms. Adafruit was explaining how the synthesizer was put together?  Total dear in the headlight look.  :help:

yeah i think we are/were. i might be a bit confuselboggled, i've been trying to find the connector ports such as rs232/usb/ etc that would tie the thing directly to the fishfinder or a puter so all you have to do after mapping on the boat is to unplug the home built unit and plug it into your desktop or laptop.

just,. i cant seem to find what i think should be there... its like this thing connects via voodoo waves or something.

and, yehp that interviewer was totally out of her depth

Ok, again feeling more like that interviewer....

This page is what she says to do (Option 2):

http://ladyada.net/make/gpsshield/directconnect.html

My deer in the headlights read is that the ff/gps takes the place of the gps module on the arduino gizmo.
Once you figure out the pinouts on the FF (or if you buy a Lowrance NMEA cable for it) you connect the yellow tx wire to digital pin 1 on the arduino and stick the ground wire in your ear. :dontknow:

The arduino takes the rs232 output of the ff/gps and turns it into usb (voodoo), plug the usb into your box, then kick the tires and light the fires. That'll read directly from the ff/gps or if you put it all the way together, it'll store it on the SD card.

There's a link on the bottom of the aforementioned page that sends you to a tut on NMEA data handling that made it clear as mud to me.
