I was watching some of yaknitup's videos on you tube, then clicked on quite a few more. there is some awesome stuff out there.  Here is my question. I have a canon d10 on the way. It seems like the best point to mount a camera to  is either far forward on the deck out of the way or up high from behind. So...  for those of you that have taken video. Do you reach up and start the video when you hook into a fish, do you let video run and just keep restarting it and edit out the good stuff? Just wondering if there is some kind of remote system or???. what do you all do for your photos and videos?

Great question!

For the most part, I will jump up to place the camera in the mount and get it rolling if I feel that I have hooked something big since I can position it in the mount and start it with one hand.  Sometimes though, I'll just start rolling if I feel like the bite is on just to fill up the memory card.  Then I'll go home and edit out most of what I shoot and put together videos using a video editing software.  Adobe Premiere Elements is a good program for this btw, but there are tons of programs out there.  I wish I had enough memory to just keep it rolling for a while, but its just a digital camera so its pretty limited.  Because of that, I'll usually only film for a few minutes at a time, sometimes keeping it going for as long as maybe ten minutes.

I wish I had some kind of remote system, that would make things really easy and your pics and vids would be more consistently focused so if you can get it, do it imo.  I use the timer on my camera for taking pics, but it's kind of tricky since it focuses when the timer is started, not when it finally takes the picture.

That would be perfect. a little waterproof remote you could clip to your PFD or something. You could set up your cam in the right position and then once you get a fish on etc. just hit record.

When I bought my latest waterproof camera, I specifically asked about a remote. Waterproof would have been nice, but Panasonic doesn't even have a remote to start with.  >:(

thanks for the answers. yaknitup... you have done a great job on the videos. It is amazing how i get my kayaking fix on this site looking at the pics and videos plus it really has helped with the learning curve.  I think the d10 can video 1hr on a 4 gig card. So maybe i can start the video. if nothing happens then just delete it and start it again. I will probably be dealing with battery life more than space on the card. I am curious what some others have done as well. thanks again. doug

Battery life isn't much concern if your camera lives on rechargable AA batteries.  A couple pairs should easily last you a whole day and can be recharged in your car while you're on your way to your destination.

There are a couple waterproof cameras out there with a "bump & shoot" function. When activated, you can tap the side of the camera with your paddle, rod, head, foot, fish, etc, and activate the self-timer.  Wait a few seconds and presto! picture taken.

If you haven't already, check out the waterproof camera selection at B&H.

That's why my buddy was wearing the helmet in the bay people gave me so much grief about. Water proof, hands free helmet cam with a remote. His was the one made by Oregon Scientific, bought at REI, not sure of the model. It's pretty sweet other than people will make fun of you for wearing a helmet on flatwater.

I keep mine mounted on the deck within arms reach, I position the shot before I launch, and when there's something worth shooting, I press the button and start rolling.

Hey pentax comes to answer your calls...I will be getting one of these soon since my optio w60 got stolen....the new pentax w90 is supposedly going to have a waterproof remote control that you can buy separately...
The waterproof camera business shot through the roof this year it looks like...there are several manufacturers who did not have waterproof cameras before but are now making them.

Strapping a tripod on the back for the birds eye shot is pretty cool too. need a remote for that.

thanks for the info yessnoo,
I called pentax and they said that when the remote comes out it will also work with the optio w80. Amazon has the w80 for about half of what the w90 is. I asked pentax what the difference is and they said there are some extra lights on the w90 for use with macro and a few changes to the case but the camera resolution, time that you can record, infared remote capabilities are all the same. it is basically the same camera. So... I am going to go with the w80 and hope the remote is released soon. They could not give me a release date. I had a canon d10 on the way but amazon said i can refuse it for a full refund. You really helped me out on this. thanks for the post. doug

It is weird they haven't come out with it already...because all their release statements said that it would be available at the same release date as the w90...oh well...
good to know on the w90 vs. w80 info because it is pretty dang expensive for what it is...
I had a w60 which worked great...my only gripe with all waterproof cameras is the picture quality is never quite as good as a point and shoot of the same price that isn't waterproof...but hey the difference isn't much...and your paying for the waterproofness...and i always thought it was funny that they market it as dustproof and waterproof...if it is waterproof wouldn't it have to be dustproof lol

anyways hope it works out for ya...i am going to be getting a new one here pretty soon

gonna need something to take pictures of the red fish with :)

I have been doing some more research on the w80 and i may have been given some wrong info. It may not be able to handle a remote. So , i hope i have not lead anyone down the wrong path. sorry, doug
