Hello all,

I was thinking about purchasing an all-around rod and reel combo for salmon as well as a rod and reel combo for bottom fish…
What is your go to combos for the salt and or fresh?

For most all yak salmon trolling and light to mid weight rockfishing (5oz or less) you can get by with just one rod.  Something in the 7.5- 8ft range, med heavy action. coupled with an abu 6500 ( I would suggest a left handed reel as you can jig with your strong arm and reel with you left and never have to switch hands with the rod) with 150-200 yards of 30lb tuff line.  Lamiglass makes some quality but still affordable (100ish bucks) lower end rods that work fine.  Even better bang for the buck is the Berkley IM7 or the new IM8 rods in 15-50 weight (80ish$), I have at least 1/2 a dozen of these for salmon fishing out the the PB, good quality/function for a good value.  I like a one piece for strength but a two piece is nice for stowing inside the yak.. If you want I can bring a couple of my favorites to the next Thursday night meeting and you can check them out in person

IMO you will catch more fish in the salt with rod like I described above instead of some dead stick pool cue that has no feel and doesn't allow you to detect the bottom from a bite.

Ditto on both the Berkley IM7-8 rods and the Abu reels.

Also, don't forget the Ugly Stiks.

Hi all,
It has been a long time since I posted.
I noticed you said something about a Thursday meeting.
In the Portland area?
Where?
What time?
Thanks for letting me lurk.
Paul.

Thanks Guys I have an old Calcutta 250 reel it has seen better days matched with a 6.5 ft trigger stick and a Dawia SL30 on an Old 7ft Pen rod I re-wrapped 20 years ago! It’s just time to start look for something new!!
It looks like I’m on the same page with the Berkley IM7 or the new IM8 rods and match it a abu 6500 reel for salmon.
Thanks Pelagic for answering my next question about line.
Demonick Perhaps we can meet-up together out your way and fish the sound together?
