Headed out to Cascade Head yesterday to fish the stacks just off shore. While in the parking lot, I pivoted to close the door of my truck and felt a pop in my foot. My brain wouldn't process that I could injure myself closing a car door, so I decided it would feel better in a couple of hours. Had my friends carry my boat to the launch, and paddled out the river mouth towards the stacks.

I started fishing the lee side of the stacks and felt incredibly wobbly. Every time I tried to put pressure on the foot pegs to increase my stability, I winced in pain. I decided to head back to the beach to let it rest. As I came into shore, I little 2 foot wave came behind me and started taking me off the line. I turned to brace on the wave, and again, couldn't keep stable without the foot pressure on the pegs. The little ankle slapper capsized me, normally no biggie because I've rolled in the surf 10,000 times. Upside down, I tried to roll, and again, the lack of pressure on the foot peg got me. I couldn't manage to roll without pushing on the pegs, tried twice, and had to bail and swim back to shore. I've only swam once in my life, when I got crushed by a 15ft wave and the boat was ripped right off my body......second swim now from a 2ft wave! totally embarrassing.

This is the second injury I've ever had from kayaking, and the second one to happen in the parking lot unloading boats. It is true what they say that 99% of kayaking accidents happen on land......100% for me. Just a little reminder to stay safe and cautious.....even when you are safely standing on the ground.
The ocean is scary, but parking lots will kill you dead. I haven't been to the doctor yet, but I'm pretty sure my foot is broken.  :'(

I'm going to give it a couple of days just to see if it feels better. It's not obviously broken from appearance, doesn't even really look bad. I just can't put any weight on it without squealing. My hope is that in a few days it will feel better. If not, I'll go to the doc. I'm really hoping to not be sidelined for the rest of the summer, and I know the doc will put me in a boot even if it's not broken.

If you had the intensity of pain I think you did - the sooner you get it checked out the sooner it gets fixed.

Nanook. I know how you feel!
The first time I loaded my prowler 13 my right elbow "popped".  Every time there after it "Pops" I have never injured the elbow???  It is just plain annoying and causes no further discomfort.

Last Saturday I was getting ready to roof my wife's garden shed that I had just built and the scaffolding collapsed!  I only fell 5' but managed to land on my Father-in-law's ankle and the rest of me came down on the broken scaffolding.  I have three cracked ribs and bruised pelvis and screwed up elbow(not the one that "pops").
Glad I have some sick time left on the books!

Geez! now that's painful. Been there too. Ribs are one of the worst in my opinion.

Get it looked at NOW!  If you torn a ligament or tendon the longer you wait the more the ligament or tendon will shorten and the harder it will be for the surgeon to repair.  If you heard or felt a pop chances are you broke or tore or severed something.  Any bruising?

Murphy must be lurkin'!
Two Sundays ago, I was pissed after being made late for the tide due to a wild goose chase i was sent on. (Kid I know went off the road, and his Mom called me up from work and asked me to go assist. She gave me completely wrong directions, told me he was somewhere other than where he actually was, as she was a bit frantic and confused.  I got back to my place and was kind of irritated over driving 45 - 50 miles and searching for an hour and a half, and was in a hurry to load my U-12 on my racks (his Dad was going to get him by then)).
U-12 ended up too far forward, and I reached out with my right arm fully extended and tried to shove it back on the bars, but it hung on something and I stretched a tendon in my arm, on the inside of the elbow, more on the forearm side than the bicep. Not too bad, but its sore. Yesterday's paddling seemed to help it.

Hope you heal up quickly, Nanook!
