Hello guys I was wondering if anyone has ever fish the Beacon Rock area? More specifically around the dock and Peirce Island?
Does this area hold Sturgeon,Salmon and or Bass?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

There is salmon fishing out in the main river, probably a few sturgeon, although there are more sturgeon closer to the dam. It is a popular spot for king salmon and gets really crowded with boats during the peak season, lots of shore fishermen on Strawberry Island as well. Thing is, this section of river is very dangerous in a kayak; fast running currents and usually very windy. I don't think there is much going on the inside channel on the north side of the island. There's always a few fish around, but the shallow, sandy basin isn't that great for sport fishing. It's tempting because there aren't many places to launch a kayak in that section of the river(I usually launch from the old boat ramp on Strawberry Island but it's a little rocky).
They just redid Hamilton Creek to help with the salmon spawning so the fishing may pick up at the east end of the Beacon Rock basin in the future, but for now, it may be too risky for the rewards in the main channel. If you go out here, stay close to shore where the current is not as strong until you get the hang of the place. If you want to go for a recreational paddle around the boat basin, it wouldn't be a bad place.

Thanks for the info ronbo613. The area looked pretty good on paper so I had to go and take a look. I noticed there were two camping spots where the boat launch is making it very tempting.
I did noticed while walking on the dock that the water was moving rather quickly.
I’m trying to find locations for smallmouth and salmon etc. etc. that’s near Vancouver that will produce fish!!  Does anyone know of slues, lakes and or rivers that would be good producers for bass, trout, salmon what ever!! I just want to fish… I don’t mind driving 2 hrs but I also would like to fish more locally sometimes!!

I would double check, but I think its currently closed for salmon.  Not sure about strugeon, you might want to check.

I do check the regs prior to fishing.
I was just wondering if anyone has ever fished the area and if they were successful or not and what type of species they were after.

Thanks  :)

I've spent a good deal of time kayaking around Beacon, and I often see steelies in the shallow semi-sheltered water around the islands. Never fished it, but know some people who do and do well. I'm not sure what the seasons are up there. Worth a reg check.

It should be known that most of the time I'm there to do "down winders".....the E wind regularly hits 20-40mph which creates nice 3-5ft rollers that you can surf from the gorge to Troutdale. It's a one way, two car kind of deal.

Word of warning, the beach to the N of beacon is a nude beach, and for some reason, that never includes attractive young women :(

Nude beaches in the PNW usually don't.  Unlike places around the world that make it look like a Playboy calender shoot in progress.  I vote that if we can't get the sea lion population corrected, at least fix our nude beaches.  Then we'll forget about sea lions all together.  ;D

No place around here includes attractive young women, unless they are underage or married.

Better pikeminnow fishing at The Dalles boat basin. Never seen any squawfish guys at Beacon Rock.

It is tempting; most of the kayak launches into the Columbia here are rocky and knarly.

If there are steelhead around Beacon Rock, they are probably in other tributaries off the Columbia where they are easier to go after, drive ten minutes more to the east and look for everybody, not a big secret. Smallmouth bass are all over, just got to find them. Sometimes it's hard to get into the river near the fish.
There is plenty of great free camping and kayak fishing away from the main highway. The Columbia is a great fishery, but sometimes it's like chewing on rocks. Some of the most beautiful country in the continental US is just to the north, it's worth it to have a look around.
