Been in my p/u for two weeks on a trip out to New England and just got back to Portland last night. I'm in no hurry to jump back in that diesel sucking pig, so I'm going to rent a little gas sipper and drive down to the salt tonight.

My yak is at Uncle's already, so my plan is to launch off Lincoln Beach. I use Unc's hose for cleaning the catch and feed the crabs a bucket of goodies off of fishing rock when I'm done.
There is parking there if anybody wants to join me, or if somebody has a better idea, I can borrow Uncles p/u to meet up with you, but Depoe Bay ramp is going to be a mess that I would rather avoid.

Sniffer, Wannabe, anyone going out in that area Sat or Sun?

I'm planning on heading over to the coast on Sunday -- have family commitments all day Saturday -- and any other weekend I'd be up for Depoe Bay, but ODOT has hwy 20 closed this weekend and going around adds 30 miles each way, so I was considering checking out Seal Rock. Too far S for you LB? Anyone else?

If I can't hook up with anyone for Seal Rock, Lincoln City would be as close as DB, so I might consider coming up there just for the company, but I cringe at the thought of the Van Dozer Suicide Alley for the return trip.

Yeah I could do Lincoln Beach Saturday, and Seal Rock Sunday. I'll have to figure out how to strap my yak in Uncles short box Toyota, but I ought to be able to figure it out.

Cool. How about we meet up at Seal Rock County Wayside. I've launched at the  state park a couple of times, but the beach is a PITA to haul a kayak and gear to. I *think* the wayside will be much more straightforward -- though I've never launched from there -- and there's a bunch of structure just offshore. I'll plan on being at the Wayside at 8:30 AM.

If anyone more familiar with the area has suggestions for better launch sites, please chime in. FishSniffer? GoldenDog?

Hi Guys,

Sorry, was indisposed for the weekend and just now seeing this.  Wondering how you did.

I've been meaning to try launching at Fogarty Creek.  Anyone try that?

Well, despite the appearance on GoogleEarth of the Seal Rock County Wayside being easy to find, it just ain't so. After making 3 passes back and forth, I finally settled on the hypothesis that the Wayside is an unmarked parking lot with beach access. Needless to say, LingBanger and I didn't end up at the same "wayside," so we didn't connect until after we each called it quits and met up along 101 as we were heading home.

Don't know what it is, but I've launched near Seal Rock on 3 occasions now and have yet to have a worthwhile outing. Each time, the wind has been stronger, the seas choppier, the swell higher than forecast, and I've yet to take home a fish. For a little salt in the wound, this time I managed to huli on the way in and lost a box of my favorite swim baits. You'd think that with my record for successful beachings through the surf being about 50:50, I'd have learned to stow *everything* below, but no. Crap! LingBanger had his own fun in the surf, but I'll let him share the experience himself. Talking about it will do you good, Tony.  :-\

Next time, I'll wait to tag along with one of the local boys. It looks like it *should* be a productive area, but I just haven't figured it out yet.

Arrived at Seal Rock a little before 8AM. Couldn't find an official sign for the "wayside" and the drop down to the sand from the turnouts on 101 were fairly steep. Did some scouting and found a dirt road to the south, Quail St. It doesn't have much parking but gets you right down to the sand. Emergency vehicle access road had yahoo ruts carved in it too big for my kayak cart, but it was a short carry to the sand.

Hauled all my gear down to the beach and got ready to launch. Tried to raise Wannabe on the VHF, no luck. Beach was empty except for a few old battle axes on a ladies retreat and figured my stuff was safe, so I ran up the road and jumped in the truck to do one more drive-by, nada. Surf didn't look too rough so I figured it was go time. Had about 4 breakers to get through. First two were gravy, third one came over the nose and put a bunch of water in the cockpit and the fourth one picked me up and rolled me to the starboard side. Huli City! I flipped the boat over and a wave peeled me off before I made it all the way back up. I then noticed my paddle leash had snapped and my paddle was going westbound. I swam through another wave and grabbed the paddle. I swam back to the yak and before I could flip it over a wave ripped it out of my hand and sent it hurling into a rock on the beach. I swam in and pulled the boat off the rock and up the sand. I then went back out for my fish bag holding my water bottle. Lost my swim baits, and a pocket with my license wasn't zipped. I waited an hour for that to wash ashore, never did. That's going to cost me. No bait, no license, day was over before it began.

I stopped at south beach marina store on the way home. Picked up a new license and a few more swim baits. Dried my stuff on the hood of the car and had some lunch. Had a much less uneventful session in the afternoon from Lincoln, Beach, I stayed out until 7:30 or so. Had only one little black on the hook, but nice whale watching. Having trouble finding structure out there, but at least I stayed dry. I was just looking for relaxation and I found it, good day after all.

Nice, I like that part.

Sorry to hear the surf wasn't friendly. That can really be a humbling experience for sure. I'm glad to hear you didn't let it discourage you though.

A while back, one boring night i marked 5 or 6 spots on the NWKA Google map from below Depoe Bay up to Tillamook that looked like possible beach launches, other the usual suspects like PC, with some structure(seeming) and decent access. This was looking from google maps so, who knows what it's exactly like.

Has anyone happened to try in these places before?

Check 'em out sometime and let me know, if there crap i'll remove them.

Might have to log on to your google account to see it:
