Spent the first 18 years of my life in SE Portland before joining the Marine Corps.  Spent almost every Sunday of the latter 3/4ths of those 18 years fishing the Clackamas, Sandy, Salmon (rare), Eagle Creek, Columbia and coastal rivers from the bank or occasional sled outing... More Recently, I have since gotten out of the Marines and am working for UPS an am currently living in San Diego.  Been am enjoying the kayak fishing opportunities available down here.  Bought my Cobra Fish n'dive a few years ago and have been fishing La Jolla, Ca ever since.  Been fortunate enough to have added a internal bait tank, gps/ff combo and a small armament of fishing gear.  I thought I'd introduce myself seeing as my there is a strong possibility I may be moving back..

I've had a bit of time to think of the available angling possibilities and am getting a bit ancy...  Have a friend who has a few thousand acre ranch on the John Day about 80 mi east of Madras.  Plan on doing a bit of steelhead and bass fishing there as well as heading out to the coast to fish the bays for chinook.   Been thinking about rigging an anchor system and drifting the clackamas and the sandy for some mixed species action (will need a partner for that though.. be a bit hard to get back the your truck that's a few miles upriver :o)...  I've been kicking around the idea of fishing the columbia and willamette but not sure how difficult the current would make things...

I was curious to know how fishing the coastline of Oregon works.. I see guys catching black bass as well as lingcod off the bottom.  Are there kelp forests in the coastal waters?  There are a plenty down here but, well.. that's down here.  I'm kinda big game angler and would like to know if they can be productive for catching salmon and steelhead...  I really enjoy being able to paddle out, catch bait and use that bait to catch big fish....  I think I may have been spoiled down here :-\

While I can't answer many of your questions, I do like the sound of that. And, yes there's a good bit of kelp out there. Where you will find salmon in relation to it, I do not know but I'm sure you could enjoy figuring it out.

Welcome Nathan,

Not a lot of live bait fishing done up here, but like you, I love that style of fishing.  We do use live greenlings to catch large lings.  Let us know how it goes with the job/move.

I'll keep you updated on the job/move..

What kind of fish would I expect to catch in and around the kelp?

Welcome Nathan!

You pm'd me a primer from BWE on LaJolla a few months back that was invaluable! Thanks again!
I also saw your intro on ifish a while back and intended to reply but never got a roundtuit. Those things can be really hard to find ;)

The Oregon coastline?,,,,,works! Bigtime!
Different kelp, no YT’s, but it most definitely works!
And you gotta wear more clothes. ;D

See my Sunday 8/12 report  “Launched like a Dory”

I can also help you with that second car shuttle problem and I've just about got deep, moving water anchoring nailed too. It's different up here, but it works!

The anchor system is probably more of a river (clack./sandy) thing.. Drift through the fast water and anchor inside the eddies and the transition from shallow/fast to deep/slow..

It's going to take a bit of experimentation but I definetely want to fish hard and try and innovate as much as possible..
