I was really hoping to get out somewhere this Saturday, but with Dory Days...I think it will have to be somewhere else for me.

Conditions look a little on the exciting side for this weekend, although that might make for some really neat shots of dory launches.

Yeah, I'm going on a camping trip this weekend down by Sisters - might hit one of the lakes up there to see if I can get some freshie AOTY points.

What is "Dory Days"?
I was down at PC for the first time July 4th, and I have to say, I've never seen anything like it down there. Pretty wild.
Is there some kind of rift between dory fisherman and Kayak fisherman?

No rift that I know of, other than it's been "their" beach forever, and some may be less inclined to share than others.  It's just like anywhere else.  They have made some rather loose comments to me as they drift by on the ocean, but a decent catch of fish will usually help lend some credability.  I just try to enjoy the place without getting in anyone's way.

The one place you don't want to be is in front of a dory once they commit to a beach landing.  I try to give them as much room as possible out of courtesy and safety.

Never been to Dory Days, but I bet it was a busy place.  Hope you had a good time.  Good luck and have fun -

Alan

Not at all.  ;)

I attended the Dorymen's Association meeting this past May, paid some dues and slapped a sticker on my truck.  I have been talking to some of the Dorymen and they have a very welcoming attitude towards kayak fishermen.  The biggest kudos they had for us was for the flags we've started flying to make ourselves more visible on lumpy days.  The main thing they ask of us is the same thing they ask of everyone else that hangs out on the beach there.  Be mindful of what's going on.  Their philosophy is that every person who uses that area has just as much of a right to be there as the next.  However, they simply ask that people be alert use common sense when they choose to hang out in that specific area where Dory's launch and land.  I've established communication between our community and theirs so if you guys have any questions or concerns, let me know.

It helps to be friendly and helpful if possible.  I've been asked by a dory driver to move his truck for him once he launched.  Safety flags, staying out of their way, and clearing the landing area quickly are all good ideas. I've tried to chat up the lookielous while dragging kayak back up to my car so their isn't a gaggle of people in the landing zones. It pays to smile and be helpful.

I didn't mean to imply there are any problems. Dory captains are usually very easy to talk to, although not necessarily talkative.  :o  It can get pretty busy on decent weather weekends and on Dory Days there are so many more people around that I'd just rather not deal with the extra commotion.

Watching dories land is always a good time.

It's even more fun to ride a Dory out, and then later back in.  Went fishing in 1994 in a 13' Dory that a friend of mine built in highschool. It's a freaking blast!

No worries, I didn't think you did. I just wanted to throw that out there to clear the air.

Jeff.... I think you definetely deserve a Kudo's for taking the time to get involved with the Dorymen Association.
This goes along ways in creating a good relationship between the areas experienced Dory boat fishermen, and the rising influx of
kayak fishermen.

I will be doing so, and if anyone else wants to, here is the link to join the Pacific City Dorymen's Association.

Thanks Jeff for getting the ball rolling.  :icon_thumright:

dory days is a festival put on by the dory association and the pc chamber. the parking lot at brew pub is set up with booths with a variety of stuff. the dory guys donate their catch and have fish fry. there is a boat parade and i think there is some kind of artisan fair downtown.

parking at the beach is a real bear.  we are about a block south of the brew pub and are  having a "junk sale".  anybody need a place to park there is usually plenty of room in the back. stop by- lots-o- cold ones in the frig
