So I've got a nice 4/3 and a 5/4/3 from surfing.  How would those work over a dry suit?  All I see are guys using dry suits in all the photos.  But I'm spent more than enough money lately on fishing gear and yak equipment and I'm trying to cut back.  I'm looking forward to hitting the ocean soon and was wondering if anyone has taken this approach.
It's never too late to start procrastinating.

Wetsuits are old school when it comes to ocean kayak fishing.  I'm cheap and I still use a one in the ocean.

Surfing wet suits make decent paddling suits, scuba wet suits do not.  I like to wear a paddle jacket or other wind breaker over my wetsuit because you can get a bit chilled in an exposed wet wetsuit if the wind picks up.

Many of us started off using wetsuits, in my case a 3 mm farmer john.  Nothing wrong with them at all.  If it's sufficient to protect you in case you enter the water and you are comfortable sitting in one and paddling in one, then by all means wear one.

I like my drysuit because it is super comfortable.  That doesn't mean a wetsuit is UNcomfortable.

I don't think they are old school.  Probably more people wear them than any other form of protection when kayak fishing on the ocean.

I'm not too worried about being in the water with it. Lol if it's good enough to surf in for 5 hours should be good enough for a couple of rookie accidental dunks.  It's good to know I can hold off on buying a dry suit for awhile.  Or atleast until it gets too warm and I have to start jumping off the yak on purpose.  God I couldn't even imagine trying to paddle or fish in a 5-7mm dive suit.

Now to go out and spend money on a Vhf and fish finder woohoo.  It's a damn good thing I got the yak at a ferndale sale.

Long as you feel comfortable with the thermal protection a wetsuit offers--you're good to go.
I wear a farmer john wetsuit for fishing in cold water--fresh and salt.  Probably no where near as comfortable as a dry suit, but when I'm fishing I don't really notice anyway ;)

Used a 4mm full body suit for years.  Only drawbacks were it could get toasty and no relief zip. +1 on the Light windbreaker (top and bottom) to keep you warm if the wind blows.  I also got tired of sitting in "wet gear" all day if I got soaked going out through the surf.  Love the dry suit but, by no means is it a required piece of gear.

I use full zip farmer johns and shorties all the time. Wear a jacket in the morning, take it off when the sun comes up.

I use my 6/4/3 surfing wettie.  A drysuit would be nice cause I wouldn't have to cook in my own sweat for hours but hey, it's what I've got.

I bought an O-niel 4/3 surf suit for yak fishing in the Ocean. It is a bit warm most days I have been out.
But on the days I huli  ::) I am grateful to have it. I had a relief zipper done proffessionally at Otter Bay Wetsuits out of Monterey.
I also wear a wind/splash jacket and pants when the weather dictates.
When in the rivers or on lakes...I just dress warmly (and wear my PFD at all times, fresh or salt)

 stay warm and stay safe!
