"All those lines in the yak scare me though"

I keep a sharp, one-hand opening, serrated edge knife on my pfd. Don't leave shore without it. I use cheap knives as I tend loose them. The cheap ones work great once or twice and then I demote them to rigging. Think of it sorta like a razor blade. You can resharpen it but it does not seem to hold an edge very well (could be I'm just a lame sharpener) I got a box of them a couple of years ago at the sportman's show 30 for $20.
I got couple of old FF's laying around your welcome to use till you get something better. If nothing else, they'll tell you where the bottom is and get the rigging in place. And did you know Ikea makes the greatest drift chute on earth ;D

Just a question about the opening knife, have you tried opening it underwater?  I use one of these attached to my vest.

I had a blunt nose version that lasted me for 10 years before I lost it so the sheath is plenty good.  I got the pointy nose version this time around because there is always a time and a place to stab things.

Underwater and upside down ;D

But your point it well taken. One less thing to do always makes sense in any situation.

Opening a Knife underwater practice, I don't even have a wetsuit yet!  I guess I need your SOT class PolePole.  BTW Fred Meyer has some nice knives on clearance for $3.  IT has a lock blade and carabineer and clip attachment.  It has a little nub on the blade and opens easy, maybe too easy.

Underwater and upside down ;D

Did you do it left handed too?   ;D

I have my knife mounted on my PFD where I can reach it with either hand.

Gilla, a little bit of thought and practice can help avoid potential situations in the future.  Just try it!!!

left handed, underwater, upside down, in the dark, tangled in kelp, under 3 1/2' of ice,,,naked

But that was easy because I'm left handed.
And MAN! that clip really smarts ;D ;D ;D
(which is why you should always wear your pfd!)

Man, I was thinking that I typed that, "what if he is left handed?"

TMI on the naked part.  I hope to never paddle naked with any of you all.

Actually naked could help, the sight of one of you nekked would put me back in my yak and paddled to shore in record time  :P.
I have practiced reentry by the way but I need to get a wetsuit, I just wear my cross country ski clothes now and don't get to far out.
