My kayak is a sit in Equinox (Costco special). I've mainly used it for dropping crab pots and some jigging for bottom fish. I recently added a fishfinder and some extra rod holders. I mainly bank fish for salmon but really want to start catching from my kayak in the sound. I just want do the simpler styles like jigging and mooching. I don't think I'm gonna be doing any trolling (ever). Next year I definitely want to try for halibut too. But for now I just wanna go for salmon without getting rundown by a boat.  Any advice? If anyone's going out and doesn't mind showing me around.

Area 13---mouth of Chambers Creek, near Minter Creek,  off Narrows marina----not much boat traffic.  Browns Point in Area 11 deep near shore, kings run along the shore and make a left into commencement Bay, best end of flood.  Points Dalco and Defiance hold kings, but way too many powerboats for comfort.  Point Richmond  a sleeper.
After August 1, Commencement Bay is open, put in along Ruston way and fish near shore east of the 2 grey navy ships, or alongside the grain elevator.
SalmonUniversity.com has good rundown of area 11 hotspots, esp the Browns Point.

I'm tearing out a bathroom and will be up on blocks for the week, but will be fishing Tramp Harbor next week, easy launch and no power boats to contend with.

Thanks for the info. I've been thinking about trying out Chambers creek but I'm not sure where to launch off from. What would be better choice? Mooching or jigging?

If you want to fish by the grain elevators and the mouth of the Puyallup, there's a closer place to put in at Thea Park at the west end of Dock Street.  It has a loading/unloading zone and a small beach to launch from.  When the area east of the boundary line opens, there can be good jig fishing near the mouth of the Puyallup.

The easiest place to put in for chambers would be sunnyside beach park.  Launching from Chambers Creek can also be done but can be a real pain.  Some good info on this subject in the "chambers creek" topic under the Washington section of the forum.

Sunnyside isn't so easy to launch from.  I've tried it.  the parking is a ways from any accessible beach and you have to zig zag your way through a fence maze, then over soft sand to a small launchable spot.   Last time I launched at the Steilacoom boat launch and paddled the extra ~mile to the mouth.  it was easier doing the extra paddling than it was goofing around with Sunnyside.  I was using a cart to move the 'yak too.  The lot by the launch is a pay lot though.  i think it was $5, but launching was a breeze.

Well we went out at the mouth of Chambers Creek. We launched from the bank of the creek just passed Chambers Bay marine storage. The tide was coming in, so it was a bit of a chore to get passed the track. The current was strong and I had to keep paddling back to drift where my FF spotted the bait balls. I was able to hook up with a small black mouth but it spit the hook. It was awesome,  it was my first time to hook up with a salmon from my yak.  My hands were still shaking afterwards. I was using a 2oz white Herring dart with a small white squid skirt over the hook with a coat of Bass Feast smelly jelly. I will post a pic later I can't post pics from my Droid.

Bob:  I've zig zagged my Tarpon 160 through it.  The hard part for me was getting over the logs without killing myself.

Pretty sweet. Congrats on your first yak salmon. A couple of us are headed out to jig the green can in the Nis delta Thurs if you'd like to join us. Don't know if they are in yet, but trying anyway.

Check your tides before going out at Chambers. The water funneling under the bridge during a tide change might as well be a river.

Per Salmon U, Chamber's is best at first light (4:30ish am), or on a flood tide.

there's an evening bite there too.  about an hour before sunset it turns on a bit.  that's when i got my two kings there.  i got them both about 100 yards away from the mouth and about 20 or 30 yards to the north of it in ~40 feet of water, right near the bottom.
