Not anything to do with yak fishing, but an awesome tuna on about 6 feet of line over the side!!

"HELP ME, HELP ME!!" No S**t help me. pretty amazing!! I love how the bite completely takes him off guard :spittake:

Funny how the other guy most likely spent more on the fly tackle that was in that boat than the boat it's self is worth, and the local bags a behemoth on a broom stick right beside him. You have to love the irony.

I wanna know how the other guy expected to land a fish like that on his puny fly rod lol.

I didn't see any link!

Fly fishing can get ridiculously expensive. I won't pay up, though. I just concentrate on trout and smaller species, so I don't have to have too much expensive gear. I have fun flicking bugs for the smaller species, but don't have any desire to spend money on the high end gear required for larger game fish.  I can fish for salmon and steel just fine in the rivers with a $3O Medalist reel and a cheaper 8 wt rod. I don't need a disc drag for those, I just palm the spool.  All my stuff is "low end" (but good enough) except for one used 6 wt setup that I bought from a fly fishing guide.

Fly fishing has gotten so trendy and expensive, that many times I have considered going back to just a bamboo pole. I was tossing around the idea of using just a stripping basket for line storage, instead of a reel. Good but inexpensive bait hooks and leader, maybe a snap swivel or two, sparkplugs and old miscellaneous nuts from the recyclable parts bin will work for weights, and I can always scrounge up whatever bait is appropriate or readily available. I have a good supply of worms under my compost piles.
And for fishing from the yak, simplifying to handlines, as heralded by Nanook, will be fine for jigging, and even trolling.

I'm trying to see how far back I can get on the trailing edge of low tech! :D

It's amazing what fly guys can do. This is the world record fly caught salmon. 70.5# chinook on 7# line on the Rogue.

I've noticed Makos getting popular w/ the fly guys too.

I have a TFO 12 Wt for Tarpon, Sailfish ect that was reasonably priced.
Would handle a 70# king but not sure if it would handle a 275# Tuna.  Those guys were very lucky that they gaffed the Tuna before it figured out what was going on.  If that thing dove it would have shattered the bambo pole or dragged the guy to the bottom.  Last time I went fishing off of the Big Island I saw the commercial guys muscle in several 200+ # tuna with a mega mono hand line.
