yeah, I didn't feather until I found myself in a windy condition that pretty much required it... after spending the day playing in that wind, i've kept things feathered.

When I got a paddle I splurged figuring it would be a constant companion for some years, and the second most important purchase after the kayak.  I got an adjustable because I had no prior experience with paddles so would need to play around with configuration.

I ended up with an Adventure Technology bent shaft carbon paddle - Ergo T4.  They have come way down in price in 2 years.  I run it with a 30 degree feather at 231 cm (I'm 5'9").  I'm not really recommending an AT paddle, but unless you know from prior experience precisely what you want/need, I am suggesting getting something light, bent shaft, with adjustable length and feather.  It will take a few trips to get it initially configured and you will occasionally tweak it as your technique improves or degrades :)  Also if you paddle more than one kayak, being able to adjust length for the difference in ride height and width is useful.

I'm using an AquaBound Manta in a 240, non-feathered.  It may be a tad on the heavy side compared to some of the other padles listed but I don't mind it too much.  Someday I may upgrade to a carbon shaft and glass blade paddle, but it will out of desire not necessity.

I’m 6’1” and the fist and only paddle I bought is a 240mm Aqua-Bound Sting Ray Carbon Shaft Paddle:
Great for recreational and light touring use, the all-purpose Aqua-Boundฎ Stingray paddle boasts a unique adjustable feathering ferrule.
•   Carbon-fiber shaft is very light, stays warm in your hands on cooler days, and offers a bit of flex for paddling comfort
•   New TLC (Turn Lock Coupler) adjustable ferrule system is so simple, it requires only two fingers to use, just select feather angle and turn to lock
•   Ferrule adjusts from 0, 30, 45, or 60-degrees using either right- or left-hand control; two-piece design breaks down for easy storage or transport
•   Grooves on the ferrule prevent sand and sludge build-up, maintaining a tight, trouble-free ferrule for years of use
•   ABX resin blade material, a blend of fiberglass-reinforced nylon, provides excellent durability when pushing off rocks or barnacles
•   Asymmetrical dihedral blade shape provides a flutter-free stroke with superior directional control
•   Precision balanced, so you can feel the performance in your hands
•   Comes with rubber drip rings to keep water away from hands and lap

It has worked out well for me.
