I will be picking up my new Hobie Outback next week from the Portland Next Adventure shop. Now I will need to get busy getting it all outfitted so I suspect I will have some questions as I get started.

I ordered a couple of RAM rod holders with the boat but now I am wondering if I got the right ones.  Since I have 4 existing in hull rod "holes" for fishing rods should I have gotten a couple of RAM wedge mounts? Have any of you used these? Do they stay into the holes solidly? What size would I need, the 1.5" model or the smaller one?  What kind of rod holders do you like best to mount into the RAM ball mount?  I will want a  holder for a fly rod and for a spinning or level wind rod and before too long a FF/GPS.

Thanks again guys. Dave

I have a Ram wedge mount for a Scotty rod holder hole.  It works great.  I use it for a fish finder though, not for rods.  I haven't tried it for rods.

Hi Craig. Can you tell me if the Hobie Outback will require the 1" or the 1.5" wedge mount? Thanks.

I think the RAM wedge mounts sizes relate to the ball size not the wedge size.  I believe the wedge will fit into a Scotty mount.

The decision on ball size is up to you.  The bigger the ball the more "grip".  I went with 1.5" balls for my yaks.  I've used RAM mounting hardware and Scotty rod holders.
