Hobie Horizontal Rod Holder Mount

Thought this was a nice accessory Hobie came out with.  My PA has horizontal rod holders inside the hull but these look great http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=35650

I'm thinking pull the reel off and dry bag it for the surf passages. 

I've often thought about something like that, but the thought ends with breaking an eye on a paddle stroke.  I suppose you can't do that with a pedal stroke.

I built something a lot like that for my fish and dive when I first got it.  I just used some pvc pipe and some pool vacumn hose.  I like the concept, But the thing that I didn't like was the fact that the reels get a good dose of salt water on all but the smallest surf launches.  More than once after a "deck awash" surf launch I would have fully saturated reels dripping sea water.   I like knowing my rod/reel is safe/95% dry inside the hull when transitioning the surf zone.   Plus to me it just screams broken rod in the event of a Huli/self rescue situation.  If the design had a way to protect the rod from breakage and the reel from sea water  I would be all over it

I have a few one piece rods that are a pain to get into the hull and even more of a pain to get out.  I will take a bit of extra reel maintenance over a snapping a rod any day.  Also, on the fresh I can use it to store a bass rod for when I get board tolling  for salmon.  I think I am going to make sure that Next Adventure has a few in stock when they are released.
