hey me and my two buds are ganna be down in newport over 4th of july weekend.  We plan on doing some jetty fishing, especially at low tide as weve killed them then, and probably do a charter one morning, but would like to launch the yaks over by the marine science center on the incoming and fish up bay thru high tide and ride the out going back to the launch.  Ive done lots of reading about the fishing in the upper bay, but not sure how dated the material is.  we plan on throwing some small jigs and some bait around the docks, pilings, sea wall, exposed rocks, etc, but if anyone has any more specific areas we should focus on, or ignore entirely, it would be much appreciated.  Ive heard rumurs there is some good perch fishing around the gas plant, and along the sea wall by embarcidero resort??  Not need anyones honey hole, just a little direction would be great.  Also heard that flat fish can be caught in the shallow waters around the maring science center during the high tide??  appreciate it,
 cody

Sounds like you have a plan.  The South wall of the jetty produces pretty good the further out you get but it also gets most of the waves.  Don't forget the finger jetties.

I'm thinking you might have better luck up river from the tank for perch.  Don't forget to pump some mud shrimp if you can find some.  They're different than sand shrimp, are dark and have hard bodies like a crawfish (which are a good substitute).

However, I haven't seen ANY flatfish in this bay (or many others) for many many years.  If you get any please do post.

Glad you saw this Fishsniffer.  I've heard of other species: perch probably further up.  Sure have seen some good posts of rock fish in the bays around here.  I get some chances for these and want to chase salmon.  Anyone hear of flatfish in Tillamook?  How 'bout herring in Yaqina?
Thanks.

I've fished there a couple times, but only out towards the jetties.  There is an awesome launch just south of the Rogue House Of Spirits.  It has a nice vehicle accessible pebble launch area, public restrooms, a fish cleaning station, and plenty of parking.  It doesn't seem like it ever gets crowded either.  Let us know what you find!

Ya weve done very well on stripped surfperch and greenling from the finger jetties, so thats were well be at low tide (if its not already covered with fisherman that is).  Last time there, there was some crazy currents flowing around them, so dont think i wanna take the yaks that far down towards the open ocean.   I think we'll either launch at the marina there or down at the science center.  Are there any fish on those jetties gaurding the marina entrance?   Our go to bait has been clam, ive got tons frozen, so i think thats what we'll be throwing, plus some small crappie style jigs.   The clam works great off the jetties.  Only flat fish ive ever caught was a couple of years ago off the columbia south jetty.  small english sole. Im afraid on a holiday weekend that the jetties are ganna be crowded, so were hoping to find some fish in the yaks.  Jigging for herring would be a ton of fun too, are they only caught in the current or can you actually jig and drift for them in the slacker water??  Ive got a feeling it wont be really productive, but id be surprised if one of us didnt catch a least something.  I'll definately make a post when we get back.  Its still 4 or 5 weeks away.
