Went to Westport this afternoon after work. Right next to the bar, the rudder pin on my Adventure broke for no apparent reason. The problem with a broken pin is that the rudder is dangling in the water, creating tons of drag and spinning me in circles. Thankfully, there was a PB near me who helped out and strapped the rudder to the top of my hull. With the broken rudder out of the water, I could relax and get fishing.

After a 25" ling and some CnR'ed >12" Black Rockfish, I hook into something big. The fish kept on diving for cover, must have been 6 times, before I finally got him close enough to see. A big dark lingcod was staring back at me. After another run, I got the landing net out and scooped him up moments before the hook was thrown! I measured over 30" when I landed him. Unfortunately, the ling got bent and shrunk a bit by the time I took a pic but it was definitely over 30"!

Yeah I've had trouble with that rudder pin myself. I ordered a few spares and keep one inside the yak. Ni e fish! Were you fishing along the jetty?

Yea, tip of South Jetty. Great fight and was my personal best lingcod.

I had stressed the pin by dropping the kayak on the boat ramp right after I bought the adventure that probably wasn't good for the rudder pin. Pins are ordered...

Very nice linger micahgee, and sounds like a cool fight as well.

Funny thing about ling cod in Alaska---they have to be over 35" to be a keeper .Of course, the state record is something like 85 lbs. so go figure.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Nice ling from the jetty!  The legal size ling is proving elusive due to the minimum size and prohibited areas here in Ak. Might have to water taxi out a couple of hours to have any shot here in Sourhcentral AK.

If that Adventure is new, check the bottom of your hatch lids. My Oasis came with a spare rudder pin snapped into a slot in one of the lids.
