Was wondering if there is a nearshore area for halibut around Newport.  (Would anyone SHARE such info?) Thanks.

Make sure and check your regs before you head out.  The near-shore (less than 40 fathoms) season is closed until next year.  I'm not sure how many "all depth" days are left on the quota this year, but I don't think there's many.  That said there are some near-shore areas for Newport halibut but access is not easy (long paddle from launch areas) and those in the know are not liable to be overly chatty about specific locations.

Thank you,  sorta figured what would come down.  I believe the all depth season is open this Fri-Sun.  Tomorrow looks like a yak could maybe get out.  Have heard the halibut are in close at least in southern CA waters.

Thanks again,

we have lotsa "Calibutt's" here now. Easy drifting with a sardine dragging in the sand, 3'-10' of water, just behind the surf break.
